For certain Nintendo Switch games, the updated Switch 2 Editions can be downloaded digitally. However, Nintendo has announced that when these same games are physically released for the Switch 2, they will come with both the original versions and the enhanced Switch 2 versions on a single game cartridge.
In a statement made to Vooks, Nintendo clarified that players who opt for physical versions of games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Switch 2 Edition won’t face the requirement of downloading extra content online. Instead, all necessary components will be incorporated directly onto the game card itself.
It’s important to mention that when it comes to Switch 2 Edition games from Nintendo, extra downloads aren’t required. As for games developed by third parties, whether or not they offer downloadable content instead of physical game cards in their releases is up to the developers themselves.
Nintendo mentioned that the physical editions of Nintendo Switch 2 games will come with both the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgraded version on a single game card (meaning they are exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 and do not require any download codes). However, some publishers might release Nintendo Switch 2 games as digital download codes inside physical packaging, without including a game card.
Nintendo unveiled its Switch 2 Upgrade Program in their recent broadcast focused on the new console. With this enhancement, games initially designed for the Nintendo Switch will operate smoothly on the forthcoming device, boasting numerous upgrades, such as enhanced graphics and extra game content.
Many games will receive upgrades to their Switch 2 Editions, such as Super Mario Party with the Jamboree TV pack, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and its upcoming title The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition along with the Star-Crossed World expansion, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
Among these games, upgrades for both “The Legend of Zelda” series will become accessible on June 5, coinciding with the release of the Switch 2. On the other hand, “Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World” is scheduled for August 28, and “Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV” will be playable from July 24.
Z-A” and “Metroid Prime 4” are anticipated to come out with a “Switch 2” version as well, which is expected to deliver improved visuals and smoother gameplay in terms of frame rates compared to the original Nintendo Switch.
As a gamer, it’s cool to know that if you’ve already got these games on your original Nintendo Switch, you can just grab the upgrade pack from the eShop to get the Switch 2 Edition enhancements. The upgrade will bring better performance, but here’s the kicker: all Switch games will run smoother on the upgraded hardware in the Switch 2. That means improved frame rates and overall stability. However, if you’re not too fussed about extra content for older titles, you might find that buying the upgrade pack is a bit superfluous.
