In a recent statement, Pierce Brosnan, who played James Bond for four movies from 1995 to 2002, expressed his thoughts after it was announced that Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, longtime producers of the Bond franchise, have established a new partnership with Amazon, giving MGM Studios creative control over the Bond series. (Jeff Bezos’ company has owned the distribution rights for all Bond films since its purchase of MGM in 2022, but Wilson and Broccoli retained creative authority over the 25-film franchise through their Eon Productions.)
Speaking to The Telegraph about the recent $1 billion Bond deal announced on February 20th, Brosnan expressed a sense of regret as he acknowledged that in today’s rapidly changing world, such transitions inevitably arrive with a tinge of sadness.
In 1995, Pierce Brosnan made his debut as James Bond in the movie “GoldenEye”, which was the first Bond film produced by Barbara Broccoli following her father’s handover of Eon Productions and control of the Bond franchise to her and her siblings that same year. Subsequently, he portrayed the secret agent in “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997), “The World Is Not Enough” (1999), and “Die Another Day” (2002). The latter was his last appearance as Bond before the series was rebooted with Daniel Craig taking over the role in 2006, also titled “Casino Royale”.
Brosnan commented, “I’d been expecting it for a while, but I believe it was the appropriate choice for Barbara and Michael. It requires immense bravery to let go. They will retain some influence. I pray that [Amazon] treats both the job and the character with grace, creativity, and respect.” Brosnan further mentioned that “only time will tell” what 007 might transform into under Amazon’s management.
Wilson and Broccoli continue as joint owners of the franchise, but they won’t be involved in producing Bond films past 2021’s “No Time to Die”. The upcoming “Bond 26” will introduce a new James Bond character, and it is expected that his replacement for Daniel Craig will also be British, according to Brosnan.
Reflecting on my role in carrying forward the storied legacy of Bond, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of pride. Collaborating with Barbara and Michael was an extraordinary experience, one that saw us breathe new life into a cinematic icon that had lain dormant for six years. With GoldenEye, we ignited a resurgence that only grew stronger over time…Of course, as everything eventually evolves and transforms, I wish the new team nothing but success in their endeavors.
Initially, during a 2022 GQ interview, Brosnan expressed indifference about who should be the next Bond. However, in a 2024 BBC interview, he recommended Cillian Murphy – an award-winning actor known for his role in Oppenheimer – as a potential successor.
Over the past few months, a number of potential candidates have been speculated for the role since Craig’s 15-year run ended. Among these are Henry Cavill, who played Superman in Man of Steel, Andrew Garfield from The Amazing Spider-Man, James Norton known for Happy Valley, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who portrayed Kraven the Hunter.
