Pinstripe Pearls

Clap along if you feel like Pharrell Williams outdid himself at the 2025 Met Gala.

On March 5th, the well-known stairs of New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art saw Ed Sheeran, the singer known for “Happy,” dressed in a style he referred to as “pinstripe pearls” for his fifth visit to the charity event. Zuri Hall from TopMob interviewed him about this attire. (Check out all the celebrities on the red carpet at the gala.)

Serving as a co-chair for the year’s most prominent fashion event, alongside A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, and Vogue editor Anna Wintour, with LeBron James serving as the honorary chair, the 13-time Grammy winner meticulously incorporated the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Back Style” into his stylish attire.

His wife Helen Lasichanh, meanwhile, opted for a black bustier bodysuit under her own suit jacket.

Moreover, even though the dress code suggested that attendees express a masculine, suit-like style in their outfits, the underlying theme carries a deeper significance.

Pharrell, who serves as the men’s creative director for Louis Vuitton, expressed on the Run-Through with Vogue podcast that the upcoming event promises to be a significant and stunning night dedicated to the color Black. He explained that we are not only celebrating the physical manifestations associated with this hue, but also the mindset, struggles, advancements, achievements, and possibilities it represents.

He went on to say that you can find it in various shapes, indeed. I’m talking about people from a diverse range, such as writers, designers, artists, scholars, and sportspeople, all categorized under ‘A’ types. That’s essentially what that night represents – the cream of the crop, the crème de la crème.

This year’s exhibition drew inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity”. In her work, she delves into how Black men creatively employ fashion as a means to envision novel ways of embodying political and societal duties.

For the “Double Life” singer, this year’s Met Gala serves as an ideal opportunity to showcase and honor both themselves and their admirers who appreciate Black culture, regardless of their racial background. This was also seen in their appearance at the 2021 event with their spouse Helen, donning coordinated Western-inspired attire.
