As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who grew up with Disney Channel Original Movies and 80s kids’ films, I must admit my excitement is piqued by the upcoming Pixar film, “Hoppers.” The premise of a human-beaver hybrid saving a group of beavers from a real estate developer strikes a nostalgic chord in me. However, I have to say that the title “Hoppers” leaves me scratching my head, given its similarity to the movie “Hop.” Hopefully, it won’t cause confusion when the movie releases.
Over the weekend at D23, Disney unveiled initial glimpses and some plot details for an upcoming original film from Pixar titled Hoppers. Amid a flurry of sequels, Hoppers stands out as a unique production. The film stars Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan, and Jon Hamm and features a futuristic concept. Scheduled for release in early 2026, Hoppers revolves around Mabel, a nature enthusiast who transfers her spirit into a robotic beaver. She forms a bond with a real-life Beaver king named King George and assists him and his companions in fighting off a property developer. The narrative carries an air of Disney Channel Original Movies and 80s children’s films, so it remains to be seen how contemporary audiences will respond.
The title “Hoppers” seems a bit unusual and may create some initial confusion due to its association with the word “Hop” and the presence of small creatures on the poster. However, the term represents the method the movie will employ for the robots to move, similar to how “Flatliners” refers to the act of reviving someone, so in context it is understandable (in a way that’s somewhat analogous to “Flatliners”).
In the vein of Pixar’s original productions, the upcoming film titled “Elio” is set to be followed by a series of Hoppers. Meanwhile, the studio has lined up sequels for “The Incredibles”, “Toy Story”, and a television spinoff from “Inside Out” (the sequel to which has become Pixar’s highest-grossing movie). “Elio”, with its intriguing sci-fi plot about a boy abducted by aliens, mistaken for Earth’s ruler, and standing trial for humanity’s mistakes, has an engaging premise. At D23, it was revealed that America Ferrera’s character, Elio’s mother in the film, will be replaced by his aunt, portrayed by Zoe Saldana, due to scheduling issues with Ferrera. Director Adrian Molina is now working on a new project, and Domee Shi from “Turning Red” and Madeline Sharafian from “Burrow” are stepping in to complete “Elio”.
Here’s the official synopsis, via Pixar’s website:
Imagine a scenario where you could actually converse with animals and comprehend their speech. In Disney and Pixar’s latest production, Hoppers, researchers have managed to transfer human consciousness into lifelike robotic animals, enabling people to communicate directly with animals! This exciting journey presents Mabel, a passionate animal enthusiast, who grabs the chance to utilize this technology. She embarks on an adventure that uncovers secrets hidden within the animal kingdom, mysteries far more profound than anything she had ever imagined.
Under the guidance of director Daniel Chong and producer Nicole Paradis Grindle, the animated series titled “Hoppers” showcases performances by Piper Curda known for her role in “May December“, comedian Bobby Moynihan famous for his work on “Saturday Night Live“, and Jon Hamm, who has starred in both “Mad Men” and “Fargo“.
Hoppers opens exclusively in theaters in Spring 2026.
