A devastating crash has occurred in India.
An Air India passenger plane, with a total of 242 passengers aboard, suffered a catastrophic crash only a few short minutes following its departure from Ahmedabad on June 12th. This tragic event was reported by NBC News, who received their information from the airline and Indian government sources.
As I embarked on my journey towards London’s Gatwick airport, I found myself among 230 fellow travelers and 12 dedicated crew members. NBC News was informed by a representative that this group included 160 Indian citizens, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals. Air India, in a statement on X, affirmed their full cooperation with the authorities. They also shared that those who were injured are being transported to nearby hospitals for immediate care.
According to Reuters, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner has unfortunately crashed in a residential neighborhood. A senior police officer reported to journalists that the impact was on a doctors’ hostel. They have cleared around 70-80% of the area so far and plan to clear the remaining portion soon.
There have been no confirmed casualty figures at the time of publishing.
As reported by NBC News, referencing data from Flightradar24, the plane’s transmission ceased almost instantly after it took off. In the wake of this incident, Boeing expressed that they were looking into the early accounts and were in the process of collecting additional details.
Video clips posted on social media and authenticated by NBC News depict columns of dark smoke rising from a civilian area close to the airport. Furthermore, images of the crash site obtained by X from the Indian Government’s Central Industrial Security Force reveal the plane’s tail sticking out of a building and emergency responders, firefighters, and other individuals congregating near charred debris.
Following the unfortunate incident, several Indian authorities expressed their sorrow, among them was Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He expressed shock and sorrow over the incident in Ahmedabad, writing on X. The situation is unbearably painful. During these difficult times, my sympathies go out to all those impacted. I’ve been communicating with ministers and officials who are making efforts to aid those affected.
India’s Aviation Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, also expressed his feelings of shock and despair. He assured that he was closely following the situation and mentioned that emergency response teams have been deployed. Medical assistance and relief support are being swiftly dispatched to the affected location.
The Tata Group, which acquired Air India in 2022, also confirmed its dedication to relief work.
