As I gaze upon the vibrant underwater world of Bikini Bottom, I’m thrilled to announce that Plankton, everyone’s favorite (or perhaps not so favorite) Krusty Krab rival, is starring in his very own movie! The talented SpongeBob SquarePants crew will bring this exciting venture to Netflix later this Spring with “Plankton: The Movie.”
Last year, as SpongeBob SquarePants celebrated its 25th anniversary with Nickelodeon, fans were treated to numerous new adventures and mischievous escapades through various projects. Among these was Sandy Cheeks’ own feature film adventure, “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” which was released on Netflix.
However, the upcoming movie on Netflix seems to be heading in a completely different direction. While Sandy embarked on grand adventures, it appears that Plankton will delve deeper into his own world and motivations with this new film. Fans can’t wait to see what this fresh take on their beloved characters has in store!
In “Plankton’s Big Screen Outing,” we’ll delve into the life of everyone’s favorite antagonist, Plankton, as he grapples with the fallout from Karen growing tired of his persistent failures. This long-time adversary takes center stage in his own tale, but rest assured, SpongeBob and his pals will join him on this journey too! Take a peek at the first trailer for “Plankton’s Big Screen Outing” above, ahead of its Netflix premiere. Meanwhile, don’t forget to check out the new poster below.
When Does Plankton: The Movie Come Out?
Beginning March 7th, Netflix will globally premiere “Plankton: The Movie”. Known for their work in animation, Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller serve as executive producers on this film, with Dave Needham directing. Longtime voice actor Mr. Lawrence reprises his role as Plankton from the popular TV series “SpongeBob SquarePants”, also contributing to the movie’s storyline. The screenplay for this new adventure is written by Kaz and Chris Viscardi, promising a fresh perspective on Plankton’s character, brought to light by those who have known him best over the years.
In the lead role for “Plankton: The Movie” is Mr. Lawrence, joined by a familiar ensemble from the “SpongeBob SquarePants” cast which includes Jill Talley, Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, Clancy Brown, and Rodger Bumpass. This upcoming movie boasts original songs penned by Bret McKenzie, Linda Perry, Mark Mothersbaugh, and Bob Mothersbaugh, as well as music composition by Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper. Essentially, it looks like the film will maintain many beloved sounds and voices from the “SpongeBob” series that fans eagerly anticipate.
What’s Next for SpongeBob?
Marking a quarter-century since the debut of “SpongeBob SquarePants” on Nickelodeon, this beloved franchise shows no signs of slowing down. Fresh episodes continue to air regularly, and spinoffs like “The Patrick Star Show” are thriving. Additionally, new movie projects are underway, with one set to premiere in theaters later this year.
The upcoming movie titled “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Search for SquarePants” is set to hit theaters starting December 19th. At present, details about this film are scarce, but it’s hinted that it will heavily feature the character of the Flying Dutchman’s Ghost. In the upcoming movie, Mark Hamill will lend his voice to the Flying Dutchman, a role previously played by Brian-Doyle Murray in the TV series. This means that apart from a new Plankton-centered film on Netflix this Spring, SpongeBob SquarePants fans can also look forward to a new theater release towards the end of the year.
