PlayStation 5 Console Rentals Are Succeeding in Japan While Game Rentals Are Declining

The Japanese market for the PS5 is doing well due to console renting. A Japanese retailer named GEO mentioned to a Japanese news outlet, IT Media News (through VGC), that the rental of PS5 consoles has been “more popular” than they initially anticipated.

Initially, GEO began providing PS5 consoles on a rental basis during the console’s debut when supply shortages impacted all markets. Since then, the company has broadened its reach by offering rentals through approximately 400 locations nationwide. At GEO, you can rent a PS5 for 8 days at around $6.62 or for 15 days at about $12.02 (¥980 and ¥1780 respectively).

The retailer noted that specific game launches, like the recent one for Monster Hunter Wilds, significantly boost the service’s appeal even further. It’s worth noting that Monster Hunter has been a highly successful series in Japan, largely due to the nation’s history of handheld gaming and the franchise being accessible on devices such as PSP and Nintendo 3DS previously.

As per GEO, while traditional video game rentals may be decreasing in Japan, console rentals continue to thrive. Mr. Sakai from GEO expressed his wish for people to rediscover the charm of rental services in a modern format. He would be delighted if everyone could appreciate the instant access and unique benefits that physical stores offer.

It appears that Sony may have recognized the success of rental services in Japan, as evidenced by their partnership with UK-based company Raylo to offer PS5 rentals in the UK, which was announced in March. Via Raylo, consumers can rent a disc drive version of the slim PS5 for £11.99 per month. Additionally, the two-controller Digital Edition PS5 is available for rental at £13.49 per month. For those seeking a more advanced option, a PS5 Pro can be rented for £18.95 per month.

As a fan excited about Raylo’s rental service, I appreciate their Flex programs that let me pay monthly for my console without tying me down. The beauty of it is, I can cancel anytime if needed. Plus, they offer longer rental options, such as 12, 24, or even 36 months, which is perfect for those who want a long-term commitment. And guess what? Raylo also provides PS5 accessories – from the DualSense controller to the upcoming PlayStation VR2 and more, including the PlayStation Portal!
