PlayStation and AMD’s Partnership With Project Amethyst Involves FSR 4

AMD has disclosed that its collaboration with Sony Project Amethyst will incorporate the use of FSR 4 in a manner yet to be specified. Via a popular social media platform, AMD has unveiled that it’s collaborating on the development of the technology models for FSR 4 – the latest iteration of its FidelityFX Super Resolution tech – with Sony.

It appears that AMD might be collaborating with Sony to implement their FSR 4 upscaling technology on the PlayStation 5 via a software patch. Alternatively, they may be discussing potential applications of this technology for Sony’s upcoming gaming console.

Conversely, this partnership appears to be a reciprocal advantage for both parties. In essence, Sony might be assisting AMD in enhancing its machine learning models, thereby enabling the AI technologies within FSR 4 to deliver superior visual quality and smoother frame rates.

Back in December 2024, I was thrilled when the exciting partnership between AMD and Sony was officially announced. Fast forward a few months, and this collaboration is now in full swing! As shared by Mark Cerny, the Lead Architect of PS5 and PS5 Pro, they’re leveraging advanced machine learning technology for both graphics and gameplay. I can hardly wait to see what amazing experiences this partnership will bring!

Through this collaboration, Cerny outlined two main objectives: enhancing the architecture for machine learning applications, and creating superior Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for video game graphics. In this joint effort, both companies will have access to a rich library of network architectures and training methods, which they can utilize to refine their respective machine learning algorithms more effectively.

It’s important to mention that the PS5 Pro includes neural network hardware, which enables the use of Sony’s AI-enhanced upscaler, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology. Collaboration between Sony and AMD through Project Amethyst might lead to enhancements for PSSR by incorporating some of the progress made in FSR 4.

AMD has collaborated extensively with Sony over many years, dating back to the use of AMD chips in the PS4 console. The PS5 incorporates an AMD chip built on RDNA 2 architecture for both routine and graphical processing tasks. On the desktop side of gaming, AMD’s most recent GPU operates using its advanced RDNA 4 technology.

In January, FSR 4 was introduced simultaneously with AMD’s reveal of their new Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards. This updated version of FSR leverages machine learning for improved performance and visuals through upscaling. Key features like AMD’s Anti-Lag 2 technology and a revamped FSR Frame Generations are also included. At the moment, FSR 4 is only compatible with RX 9000-series GPUs; however, on the software end, any game that currently supports FSR 3.1 will automatically benefit from FSR 4’s capabilities.

The initial shipments of AMD’s new RX 9000-series graphics cards have started appearing in retail stores. Specifically, the Radeon RX 9070 XT and the regular RX 9070 models are now available, with the former priced at $599 and the latter at $549. These cards cater to mid-tier gamers who desire a smooth 1440p gaming experience.

The two new GPUs come equipped with 16 GB GDDR6 VRAM, but they differ in terms of compute units. Specifically, the XT model boasts 64 compute units, whereas the standard RX 9070 has 56 compute units. Additionally, there are variations in clock speeds and power consumption. The more potent RX 9070 XT operates at a base speed of 2.4 GHz, with a boost clock that can reach up to 3 GHz, and it requires 304 Watts of power. In contrast, the standard RX 9070 runs at a base speed of 2.1 GHz, with a boost clock that can go up to 2.5 GHz, and it needs 220 Watts to function.

At this year’s CES 2025, I got a peek at some exciting new hardware from AMD – the Radeon RX 9060 XT and Radeon RX 9060. These low-end GPUs look promising, but they’re yet to reveal their price tags and release dates. I can hardly wait for more details!
