PlayStation confirms movie and TV slate – Helldivers 2, Horizon Zero Dawn and more being adapted

Sony’s PlayStation brand is planning to broaden its presence in the film industry by developing adaptations of games like ‘Helldivers’ and ‘Horizon Zero Dawn’. Additionally, they announced that an animated series based on ‘Ghost of Tsushima’ is under production.

According to The Verge, announcements were shared during Sony’s keynote at CES 2025. Onstage were PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash and Screen Gems president Ashley Brucks. It was revealed that Horizon is in its initial phase with Columbia Pictures involved, while Sony Pictures will oversee Helldivers 2 production.

Additionally, join the list of games-turned-movies (Gran Turismo and Uncharted) and series (Twisted Metal and The Last of Us). This implies that these titles are also moving from gaming platforms to the big screen or television.

Information about the release window for season 2 of the show featuring Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal has been recently announced.

PlayStation movie and TV slate confirmed

Here’s what we currently understand regarding the upcoming TV and movie adaptations of the latest PlayStation-originated intellectual property.

Helldivers 2 is getting a movie

Moving forward, I’m thrilled to reveal that we’re teaming up with Sony Pictures for the creation of a movie based on the hugely successful PlayStation game, Helldivers 2. This exciting news was shared by Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, at CES 2025. Other specifics about the project have yet to be disclosed.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but share my excitement about Helldivers 2, a thrilling co-op third-person shooter that’s reminiscent of Starship Troopers. Developed by the talented minds at Arrowhead Game Studios, this game truly shone in 2024. In just 12 weeks, an astounding 12 million copies were snapped up by gamers like me, making it the fastest-selling title to date from PlayStation Studios, a record I’m proud to be part of!

In the not-so-distant future of the 22nd century, I’m part of an elite squadron defending Super Earth, a planet that’s our last bastion of freedom. We’re up against some formidable foes, like the lethal Automatons and colossal Terminids – giant bugs, for those who might be new to this universe! The creators have a knack for infusing humor into the most unexpected situations, so we’re not just battling alien threats but also their witty banter. It’s a comedy adventure that keeps me laughing through the mayhem!

Horizon Zero Dawn is also heading to the big screen

Sony’s PlayStation Studios and Columbia Pictures are teaming up again, this time for the Horizon Zero Dawn movie, which plans to bring the storyline of the initial game to life on the big screen. Previously, these two entities collaborated on the Uncharted film, set to hit theaters in 2022 with Tom Holland in the lead role. However, this project garnered a varied reaction from fans and critics alike.

Qizilbash hinted at some aspects (through IGN) saying, ‘Picture this: Aloy’s captivating backstory unfolding in a lively, future setting teeming with colossal machines, all for the first time on the silver screen.’

For quite a while now, an adaptation of Horizon has been under development. At first, Netflix intended to produce a live-action TV series with Steve Blackman serving as the lead director (similar to his work on The Umbrella Academy). However, these plans were put on hold in July 2024 following reports by Rolling Stone that alleged Blackman had displayed toxic behavior and bullied people on set.

Originating from Guerilla Games, Horizon Zero Dawn is an action role-playing game initially released for PlayStation 4 in the year 2022. This narrative unfolds around a young huntress named Aloy who embarks on a quest through a post-apocalyptic world dominated by machines to uncover her past. With over 20 million copies sold, it has become a significant success.

Ghost of Tsushima is becoming an anime

Sony’s subsidiary Crunchyroll has been given permission to create an anime adaptation of the game, Ghost of Tsushima, developed by Sucker Punch. So far, specifics have not been revealed, but it is known that the project will likely center around the game’s Legends co-op multiplayer mode.

After demonstrating the exceptional quality and adaptability of our game properties in numerous successful movie and TV ventures, we’re thrilled beyond words to unveil our inaugural anime adaption,” stated Qizilbash (as reported by IGN).

It was stated that the captivating, immersive universe of ‘Ghost of Tsushima’ and its Legend mode, inspired by Japanese mythology, offers an ideal backdrop for this venture. Aniplex is deemed an ideal collaborator to transform Sucker Punch Productions’ successful video game into a visually stunning anime series.

According to Crunchyroll’s president, Rahul Purini, the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima anime will provide fans with a thrilling new method to delve into the game, offering an innovative anime-style presentation that is both daring and trailblazing.

In the year 2020, Sucker Punch Productions unveiled the game Ghost of Tsushima, which has since been purchased by over 13 million players worldwide.
