PlayStation 5 gamers are finding themselves divided over a recent Xbox game that made its way onto their console, as some express confusion about the game’s widespread acclaim since its late-year launch in 2020. In days gone by, an Xbox game on PS5 would have been considered unusual, even implausible. Nowadays, however, this phenomenon is becoming more and more commonplace.
As Xbox has grown its publishing reach and struggled to make headway in PlayStation’s console market share, it has had to adopt a multi-platform strategy. Despite the increasing frequency of Xbox games on PS5, when such an occurrence takes place, the game still garners additional interest due to its novelty.
2021 saw the closing of Xbox and Bethesda’s yearly lineup with the launch of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, one of the standout titles of the year and among the top Xbox games from the past couple years. Approximately five months later, on April 17, it made its way to PS5, providing PlayStation enthusiasts their initial opportunity to experience the new game by MachineGames, a Swedish studio famed for their modern Wolfenstein series.
After its launch, the latest Indiana Jones video game received a score of 87 on Metacritic and numerous favorable user reviews from multiple platforms. On the other hand, there appears to be significant disagreement about the Bethesda game on the PlayStation 5 subreddit, with some users claiming that it is excessively praised.
A recent post sparked a discussion about ‘Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.’ Despite being a fan of Indiana Jones, Uncharted, Tomb Raider, Wolfenstein games, and appreciating its similarities to immersive sims like Hitman, the user found it dull after investing numerous hours. They enjoy games without map markers, characters with heavy grounded animations like RDR2, but were hoping for something distinct from typical AAA games. However, they couldn’t continue past the Giza level due to its boredom.
Although individually, this viewpoint might seem insignificant, it’s worth noting that when compared to other responses to the post, a significant number of them share similar sentiments.
I played it when it first came out on Xbox, but I didn’t make it past Giza and I have to admit, I just don’t understand all the excitement surrounding it. It seems to me that the hype is overblown. The graphics are decent, but not amazingly so. What really let me down was the gameplay.
Despite the general consensus not being in favor of the post, many have voiced their disagreement with it and the accompanying comments. This pushback suggests that people have actually had a good experience with the latest PS5 launch.
The game was amazing, I completed it in platinum status just yesterday. It was thrilling to delve into the partially open environments they designed. There are numerous undiscovered mysteries and treasures tucked away. The narrative was captivating.
While the Metacritic score might imply a consensus, there appears to be a wider range of opinions about the game than what’s suggested by these scores and discussions within the Xbox community. This is likely due to the fact that many Xbox users could play it for free through Game Pass, which certainly boosts its popularity. On the other hand, PS5 owners had to purchase the game at $70.
After considering all aspects, I’d like to hear your thoughts: Does the movie Indiana Jones and the Great Circle receive too much praise, or do you find it deserving of its acclaim?
