Enthusiasts of PlayStation are expressing concerns that the PS3 series may not be revived anymore after Sony’s recent announcement. Despite being the least sold PlayStation console compared to others like the PS2 and the yet-to-reach-its-potential PS5, many consider it as Sony’s best console due to the outstanding series it launched. It is surprising given its lower sales numbers. Notably, several iconic PlayStation franchises such as The Last of Us, Uncharted, Infamous, Demon’s Souls, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, and Motorstorm all started during the PS3 era. Whether this lineup of series is as impressive as those that debuted in other generations is debatable, but it definitely warrants discussion. Contrastingly, the PS5 generation has been lacking in introducing compelling new series so far.
Looking back, there’s no denying that the PlayStation 3 era was something special, and one of the games that truly stood out during that time is undoubtedly LittleBigPlanet.
Following the latest developments, it appeared as though the series was temporarily halted. Now, it seems more like it has been permanently discontinued and laid to rest. As X user and PlayStation enthusiast Radec observes, Sackboy has disappeared from the PlayStation Productions opening sequence, suggesting that it is no longer a key intellectual property for PlayStation, at least in terms of its multimedia strategy which plays a crucial role in its current overall strategy.
It slipped my mind to bring it up earlier, but I can verify that Sackboy is no longer featured in the PlayStation Productions intro, as seen in the image below (the 2023 version from Gran Turismo). To be honest, I’m not a big fan of this current phase where Sackboy seems to be disappearing.

Although this doesn’t provide definite evidence, it suggests that things might not be going well for the PS3-era character. However, there’s a glimmer of hope: the developer responsible for the series, Media Molecule, has never taken on a project larger than LittleBigPlanet. Given their recent experience with Dreams, it seems plausible that Sony is currently having them work on a new installment in the series. However, this assumption isn’t fully supported by the available information.
Currently, Sony (PlayStation) hasn’t responded to the recent rumors or changes that have been circulating. However, there are several factors leading us to believe this may not alter, but should anything change, rest assured we’ll promptly revise our story.
