As a seasoned gamer with decades of racing games under my belt, I must say that the announcement of My First Gran Turismo has me both excited and intrigued. I’ve raced my fair share of virtual cars on PlayStation platforms since the original Gran Turismo graced our screens back in 1997, so it’s fascinating to see how the series is welcoming new drivers into the fold.
To mark its 30th anniversary, Sony’s PlayStation is commemorating this milestone with a special focus on Gran Turismo, a significant part of their rich history. Since 1997, this racing series has been a mainstay across Sony platforms, gracing each PlayStation console and even the PSP. For those who have longed to dive into this series but are unsure where to begin, PlayStation is making it easier with the upcoming release of “My First Gran Turismo“, a free game available on both PS4 and PS5. In a recent blog post, Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi discussed “My First Gran Turismo“, emphasizing their intent to attract new players.
According to Yamauchi’s description, they have designed the experience to be user-friendly, making it simple for anyone to grasp the fundamentals of driving like steering, braking, and speed control. As players progress, they will gradually gain confidence and tackle more complex challenges that enhance their driving abilities over time.
In contrast to many Gran Turismo titles that boast a vast array of automobiles, My First Gran Turismo will offer a more limited selection, with approximately 18 vehicles to pick from initially. Though the complete roster is yet to be disclosed, players can anticipate recognizable favorites like the Mazda RX-7 Spirit R Type A (FD) ’02 and the Lamborghini Countach LP400 ’74. Additionally, some familiar tracks from past installments of the series will make a return, such as Deep Forest Raceway, Kyoto Driving Park, and Trial Mountain Circuit.
The game titled “My First Gran Turismo” will provide Virtual Reality (VR) compatibility, however this feature is only available on PS5 and PlayStation VR2. This means that players using the PS4 console won’t get to enjoy the VR mode. Luckily for those who recently purchased PlayStation VR2 due to its significant Black Friday discount, the timing of the game’s release couldn’t be more perfect! While it’s uncertain how immersive the VR mode will be, it’s worth mentioning that many players have appreciated the VR2 support in “Gran Turismo 7” over the past year. Here’s hoping that “My First Gran Turismo” delivers a similarly impressive VR experience!
As a dedicated fan myself, I’m eagerly awaiting the release of “My First Gran Turismo.” While it’s too early to predict how veterans and newcomers alike will react, it’s undeniable that the affordable price point is a compelling draw. It’s heartening to see Sony exploring fresh avenues to engage with the franchise’s fanbase. By offering this title for free, they are likely to attract a multitude of players who might not have considered Gran Turismo otherwise, and possibly entice them to invest in existing games as well.
