Sony is offering free extensions for PlayStation Plus as a gesture of goodwill following the recent PSN outage. This outage affected the PlayStation Network on both PS5 and PS4 consoles for approximately 24 hours, causing several significant services linked to the devices to become unavailable. As the network stayed down, PlayStation users expressed their dissatisfaction and requested compensation. Now, Sony has confirmed that they will be addressing this inconvenience in some form, starting with providing free extensions on PlayStation Plus.
Through a recent update on social media, PlayStation announced they’re offering complimentary access to PlayStation Plus for five days. However, it’s important to note that only current PlayStation Plus members will receive this free offer. In other words, those who aren’t already subscribed won’t be automatically enrolled in the subscription service. Although five days of PS Plus might not seem like much, it’s actually five times longer than the outage on PSN, making it a worthwhile deal indeed.
PlayStation announced that their network services are now back to normal following a technical problem. They express their apologies for any trouble caused and appreciate the community’s understanding. As a gesture of goodwill, all PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive an extra 5 days of service.
The network issues we encountered have been successfully resolved, we’re truly sorry for any trouble you may have experienced and appreciate your understanding. As a token of our appreciation to our loyal PlayStation Plus community, all members will receive an extra 5 days of service automatically on their accounts.

It may appear unusual that the compensation from Sony is exclusive to current PS Plus members, but these individuals are actually the ones most affected by the PSN outage since PS Plus membership is essential for playing most multiplayer games on both PS5 and PS4 consoles. In other words, anyone who wanted to play online games during the downtime was likely already a PS Plus subscriber in the first place.
Despite Sony’s efforts to move past the PSN outage, numerous PlayStation users remain curious about the cause. So far, Sony has only mentioned an “operational issue” as the reason for the network failure, leaving many to speculate that a cyberattack could have been responsible. However, with no further details emerging, it appears that such concerns can now be eased.
