As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Thursday night’s PlayStation Plus surprise was as unexpected as a level boss appearing out of nowhere in a classic RPG. The sudden appearance of Final Fantasy 16, the latest installment in one of gaming’s most iconic series, without any official announcement left me scratching my virtual beard in puzzlement.
On Thursday evening, subscribers of PlayStation Plus found themselves puzzled when they received a free version of the exclusive PlayStation 5 game, “Final Fantasy 16”, without any prior announcement from Sony. To their surprise, it turned out that this was the latest mainline Final Fantasy game, excluding “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth” released earlier this year. The situation became even more perplexing as it was unclear which versions of PlayStation Plus were eligible for downloading the game and in which regions “Final Fantasy 16” was being offered for free.
Rumors about Final Fantasy 16 being available for free with PS Plus subscriptions began circulating on social media on Thursday evening. Some noticed that the game’s listing in the PlayStation Store stated “Included with the Game Catalog in your PlayStation Plus subscription.” Screenshots of store listings suggested that this message appeared only when viewing from a PS5, not the web version of the PlayStation Store. It seemed that the free version was available exclusively for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. Many users confirmed they were able to download the game at no cost and it appeared to be the full game, not just a trial version.
Not every individual was able to download “Final Fantasy 16” for free, despite assumptions that it would be added to the PS Plus catalog. Since Sony didn’t make an official announcement, it was left up to subscribers to figure out that only Premium subscribers were supposedly eligible for the game. To make matters more confusing, even some Premium members couldn’t find the game on their PlayStation Store. I’m among several others who checked via PS5, but “Final Fantasy 16” didn’t appear as a free PS Plus title for me.
If you’re one of those who received a free copy of “Final Fantasy 16”, it seems you can still hold onto it as there hasn’t been any reports of it being taken away from accounts so far. The offer, however, appears to have expired as no one has managed to claim their copy recently. With the September PS Plus games having been unveiled, indicating that the Extra and Premium games will soon be announced, many are guessing that “Final Fantasy 16” might be included in these upcoming announcements for next month.
It has been announced that “Final Fantasy 16” will also be available for PC users starting in September. If you don’t have access to the game through a PlayStation Plus subscription, you can still purchase a more affordable version of it on your PC platform.
