PlayStation Plus Subscription Service Has Seen Continued Growth Despite Price Hikes

Sony announced that, although they’ve increased the cost of PlayStation Plus subscriptions lately, the service continues to expand. In their latest report on PlayStation business operations, they’ve hinted that subscription prices across all tiers might be adjusted in the future.

As a gamer, I was thrilled during the presentation when Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president and CEO, Hideaki Nishino, shared some exciting news. It turns out that more of us, as PlayStation Plus subscribers, are choosing the pricier tiers like Premium and Extra. In fact, these premium options now make up a significant portion of all PS Plus subscriptions!

Nishino mentioned that an increasing number of our subscribers are opting for our Premium and Extra plans, which currently account for about 38% of our total subscriber base. He provided a more detailed analysis, disclosing that as of the end of FY 2024, 22% of these subscribers were on the Premium plan, while 16% were on the Extra plan. This is a significant increase from the 17% and 13% respectively in FY 2022.

According to Nishino’s assessment, this growth suggests that Sony’s users recognize value in their subscription service in multiple areas, including the selection of free games and enhancements to the entire online platform infrastructure.

Our players greatly appreciate PlayStation Plus and it helps keep them engaged. In fact, we’ve noticed a growing preference for higher-tier services among our users, as demonstrated by the subscription mix we had in FY2024. About 38% of our gamers now subscribe to either PlayStation Plus Premium or Extra.

Despite the price hikes we made on a global scale in fiscal year 2023, as well as local price adjustments in specific countries more recently, aimed at enhancing our overall pricing approach within particular market groups, and taking into account fluctuations in foreign exchange rates.

The rise in prices is partly due to the enhanced value we provide to our players. This comes from continuously improving the quality and variety of our content, plus investing in features that better tailor the service to each player (like personalization) and make it easier for them to discover new content.

Nishino concluded the discussion, expressing that our company intends to enhance the service with additional content and upgrades over time. Furthermore, it’s possible that Sony may adjust their pricing for PS Plus, which could lead to an increase in cost, though this would depend on the worth of the service to the players.

He stated that the PlayStation Plus service provides a lot of worth to our gamers, and we plan to increase its value even further while also adapting our pricing approach flexibly to optimize profits.

The increase in prices for PS Plus was revealed in March, affecting regions such as Australia, South Korea, Southeast Asia, and 15 Latin American countries like Chile, Bolivia, and Mexico. This move was justified by Sony citing “global market conditions” as the reason behind their decision to raise the subscription fee.

In their statement, the company explained that the price change is necessary to keep providing top-notch games and additional perks as part of your PlayStation Plus membership. The new prices, which were previously announced a few months back, will begin affecting subscribers’ bills starting this month.
