PlayStation Seemingly Reveals First Official Details of PS6

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and patience when it comes to the PlayStation 6 (PS6). The tech industry moves at breakneck speed, and Sony’s collaboration with AMD on the “Amethyst” project is a testament to that. The potential for machine learning and ray tracing technology advancements has me eager to see what the future holds.

Sony has shared preliminary details about the technology behind the upcoming PlayStation 6, following the release of a slightly enhanced version of the PlayStation 5, known as the PS5 Pro. Compared to the standard PS5, the Pro model offers extra features that Sony intends to further develop for their next console. Although the PS6 hasn’t been officially unveiled, Sony’s Mark Cerny has provided fans with a sneak peek into potential future capabilities of the system.

Today, PlayStation unveiled a deep dive into the technology powering the upcoming PS5 Pro, offering unprecedented detail compared to previous releases. The focus was primarily on advancements in tech since the initial launch of the PS5 in 2020, and how these improvements have been integrated into the design of the PS5 Pro. In essence, what they’re saying is that the tech has come a long way since then, and they’ve managed to harness some of these improvements for the PS5 Pro.

While the majority of this video only touched on the PS5 Pro, Cerny did take the opportunity near the end of the address to talk about the future. To that end, he said that Sony is working directly with tech corporation AMD on a new project dubbed “Amethyst”. This project will center around two primary goals and will see Sony and AMD trying to expand upon what machine learning is capable of while also trying to expand further on the “richness of game graphics”. This latter point will involve a jump in ray tracing technology, which Cerny said he believes will happen multiple times over the next decade.

It’s quite possible that advancements from the Amethyst project may serve as a crucial foundation for the PS6. Previous speculation indicated that Sony had entered an agreement with AMD in early 2024 to incorporate AMD technology into their upcoming consoles. Cerny’s announcement of his collaboration with AMD aligns with these rumors, suggesting that the PS6 is probably the next significant hardware project that Cerny and the team at Sony will focus on.

Although the development of the PS6 has just begun, given past console cycles, it’s likely that we won’t see the device launched for several more years. For instance, the PS4 was released seven years after its predecessor, the PS3, in 2020. If history repeats itself, this implies that the PS6 might be aiming for a release in 2027. Therefore, it’s unlikely that Sony will unveil the PS6 anytime soon, despite the fact that they are reportedly already working on it.
