PlayStation Shocks Fans: New PS5 Game from Days Gone Developer Canceled!

As a passionate gamer, I was genuinely looking forward to diving into the latest masterpiece from Bend Studio, the team behind Days Gone, for my brand-new PS5. It’s no secret that PlayStation stands tall among gaming giants like Xbox and Nintendo, renowned for their exclusive titles that have been shaping the industry for three decades.

PlayStation has always prided itself on its robust portfolio of top-tier studios, such as Naughty Dog, Guerilla Games, Sony Santa Monica, and Insomniac Games, to name a few. However, even giants like us have faced some challenges during the PS5 generation.

Don’t get me wrong; there have been some incredible games released, like Returnal, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and God of War Ragnarok. But, unfortunately, we’ve also had our fair share of setbacks. The unfortunate news is that one of the highly anticipated games has been canceled, leaving us gamers eagerly waiting for more updates from PlayStation.

2024 saw me witnessing the closure of Firewalk Studios, a team renowned for their work on the critically panned game “Concord”. This live-service shooter, a project that spanned over a decade, was unfortunately shut down just two weeks after its release, due to disappointing sales and lackluster response from gamers. The market seemed to speak loud and clear: they weren’t eager for another live-service hero shooter.

While the poor reception of “Concord” may have had a significant impact on Firewalk Studios, it also sent ripples through the gaming industry as a whole, serving as a stark reminder of the power gamers hold in shaping the direction of game development.

According to recent reports from Bloomberg, Sony has scrapped two upcoming live-service games this week – one being a new God of War title in development by Bluepoint Games (responsible for the PS5’s Demon’s Souls remake), and the other being a fresh project from Bend Studio (known for Days Gone). Since 2019, Bend Studio has faced numerous challenges; their previous release, Days Gone, received mixed reviews and didn’t meet Sony’s sales expectations. Despite selling well, it appears that many copies were sold at discounted prices. Consequently, plans for Days Gone 2 were abandoned, with the studio moving on to a new project instead.

For quite a while, rumors circulated that Bend Studio was developing a fresh Uncharted game, but it seems this project was abruptly terminated at an early stage. Following this, Bend hinted at a new game in the works without disclosing further information. However, for several years now, the studio has remained silent, leading many to speculate that they were preparing to unveil their next project soon, but so far, nothing has been revealed. In 2024, some leaked screenshots from Bend’s secretive new game surfaced. These images showcased a shooter with a futuristic aesthetic, which sparked comparisons to Bend’s popular Siphon Filter franchise.

Despite the setback, it appears that Bend Studio is not closing down and instead, they are collaborating with PlayStation on a new project. Whether this could lead to a sequel for “Days Gone” or something entirely different is yet to be determined. Given that “Days Gone” is being adapted into a movie, it’s possible that a follow-up game could align with the film. It’s also plausible that the abandoned Uncharted project might be revived, as Bend was involved in creating “Uncharted: Golden Abyss”. For now, it seems there may still be positive developments for Bend Studio, although there is uncertainty about potential layoffs.

It’s unclear why PlayStation decided to cancel projects like this or God of War, but it might be due to the lessons learned from Concord’s failure. With live-service games, there’s a risk of investing hundreds of millions of dollars only to see them flop, as was the case with Concord and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. These games either die slowly or fail immediately upon release. However, PlayStation has Marathon in the live-service category, but it seems they might be heeding fans’ requests for more single-player blockbuster games instead.
