Reports indicate that PlayStation might be bypassing the traditional summer gaming season usually associated with E3 and Summer Game Fest. Known as a significant player in the gaming industry, PlayStation has experienced some setbacks during this console generation. However, it managed to bounce back impressively from the PS3 era with the PS4. The PS4 was a powerful yet affordable device that consistently delivered hit games, helping PlayStation regain its dominant position from the PS2 era. As we transitioned into the PS5 generation, there has been a sense of instability. Several PlayStation titles have been shelved, fewer big-name exclusive games are being released, and the company’s direction seems unclear.
The PS5 continues to demonstrate its power, yet some find its performance inconsistent. Moreover, many developers are still launching games for the PS4, leaving fans feeling that the full potential of the PS5 remains untapped. This delay seems to be easing, but with the PS5 possibly nearing the end of its lifespan, there’s speculation that this console generation might conclude with just a few exceptional exclusives. It’s possible that Sony has more tricks up its sleeve, but recent whispers hint at a wait before we fully understand what they have in store.
PlayStation May Skip a Summer State of Play This Year
Based on John Harken, a well-connected user and insider on ResetEra, there may be a possibility that Sony (PlayStation) will delay their summer showcase or State of Play event until around September. This speculation arises from Harken’s simple response of “Indeed” to another user’s theory about the absence of a summer event. Previously, it was assumed that PlayStation would host a summer showcase this year, but historically, a showcase is distinct from a State of Play, with the latter being shorter and focusing on games close to release, while the former covers games with longer development timelines.
It’s not unusual for whispers about what Sony (PlayStation) might reveal at these events to start circulating by now. But this year, things have been unusually quiet, and other sources claim they haven’t heard anything about a summer event. If that’s the case, it would be the first time since 2019 that PlayStation won’t make a significant appearance during the summer gaming events. Xbox and several third-party studios will have plenty to present, and it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think that PlayStation might still have something to share during Summer Game Fest to keep fans engaged. However, don’t expect a major presence from them.
For the remainder of this year, PlayStation has two major releases lined up – “Death Stranding 2” and “Ghost of Yotei,” set to be released in October. However, details about what’s coming after that are still scarce. Some fans are eagerly awaiting a new PlayStation event which might showcase fresh footage for Naughty Dog’s upcoming title, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,” or possibly even their as-yet unannounced second project. We’ll just have to wait and see.
What do you want to see from PlayStation’s next event? Let me know in the comments.
