On Thursday, 22nd May 2025, at 5:15pm, it appears as if an old adage known as “Sod’s law” has come into play. This phrase refers to the seemingly inevitable occurrence of the opposite of what you expect. In this case, after penning nearly a thousand words discussing whether Sony might host a summer event – lo and behold, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb reveals that Sony is arranging a “State of Play” in June instead!
For the moment, everything seems to be based on conjecture and unconfirmed sources; however, this particular journalist has shown a knack for accurately forecasting such occurrences in the past.
It’s worth mentioning that Grubb expresses concerns about a large PS Showcase and hints at the possibility of a more modest event. Additionally, it seems like this occasion could occur following the Summer Game Fest and its accompanying streams.
Sure thing!
Indeed, feel free to keep clicking on our Talking Point. Is it necessary for Sony to hold a summer showcase? That’s still up for debate, right? We certainly didn’t spend our time writing that article in vain! Absolutely not!
In the tradition spanning almost all PS5 generations, Sony has typically organized a digital event in May. This could be either a PlayStation Showcase or a State of Play. However, there’s a growing possibility that Sony may break this pattern in 2025.
Based on information from a trustworthy source, NateDrake, who frequently posts on the ResetEra forum, hasn’t received any news about a Sony event scheduled for May this year. However, it’s possible that Sony could be planning a livestream and NateDrake’s sources might not yet be aware of these plans.
This individual, who accurately predicted the release date for the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 and has a history of accuracy, particularly in revealing PS5 ports planned by Microsoft – as evidenced by the releases of Forza Horizon 5 and Gears of War on PS5 – seems trustworthy. There’s little reason to question their predictions.
It would be quite a letdown if Sony didn’t offer any livestreams during their usual summer season for gaming announcements, but given the current situation with Death Stranding 2 being just a month away, Marathon turning out to be a mess for hardcore gamers, and Ghost of Yotei already having its release plans laid out, it’s not entirely unexpected.
To put it simply, one of the main reasons people might be unsure about the event is this final point. Announcing the release date for Ghost of Yotei would have been ideal to wrap up a State of Play livestream. However, Sony opted to unexpectedly announce it on a Wednesday afternoon last month instead.
As a gamer, I’m eagerly anticipating the return of Marvel’s Wolverine and Saros, but if Sony’s not quite ready to give us another sneak peek, it might be tough for them to fill a livestream with enough exciting content from their own stables. Historically, PlayStation Showcases have been stacked with first-party exclusives, while State of Play events tend to focus on third-party titles, occasionally showcasing something from PlayStation Studios.
Although there won’t be an in-house Sony showcase next month, it doesn’t mean that we won’t hear about new PS5 exclusives. In fact, last year’s Summer Game Fest livestream showed us that Sony is open to sharing a few reveals with Geoff Keighley, as he announced LEGO Horizon Adventures on his stage.
