As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say, Sony seems to be thriving financially, judging by the state of their balance sheets. But let me tell you something, the hunger for greater earnings is an endless quest that never truly fades away.
Regrettably, this has led to additional layoffs within Sony’s esteemed Visual Arts department, a first-party development group responsible for motion capture, art, animation, and more across their studios. Notably, they have collaborated closely with Naughty Dog on various The Last of Us series.
According to Kotaku’s report, some employees who had been working on Bend Studio’s recently canceled project have lost their jobs. However, a source revealed that these layoffs extend beyond just that project and are broader in scope. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
Recently, PlayStation has undergone a significant period of change, leading to the cancellation of the sequel to Days Gone from Bend Studio, as well as a planned live-service God of War game by Bluepoint. This decision comes after the disappointing launch of Concord, which was pulled off the market and shut down just weeks later due to poor performance.
Although Sony is eagerly anticipating a significant year for PS5 with notable exclusive titles like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yotei, it’s also quietly recovering from its live service approach that hasn’t quite taken off, except for the remarkable success of Helldivers 2.
