As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been diving deep into the creative minds behind PlayStation Studios’ main game development squads. In this exploration, I’ve chosen to exclude Sony’s auxiliary studios like XDEV, Valkyrie Entertainment, and Nixxes from my discussion for now.

Japan

Here are all of Sony’s teams working out of the company’s home country.

Polyphony Digital

Initially known as the in-house team Polys Entertainment, Polyphony Digital has gained notoriety primarily for developing Sony’s premier racing simulation series, the iconic Gran Turismo franchise.

Firesprite

Firesprite originated from a team of developers who were previously part of Studio Liverpool, a Sony studio that closed in 2012. They are best known for creating The Persistence and collaborating with Sony on projects like The Playroom and The Playroom VR. Today, they stand as SIE’s largest UK-based development studio.

Established: 2013

Location: Liverpool, England

Current Work: The projects Firesprite is engaged with at present are cloaked in secrecy, but there’s a strong buzz that one of them might be a horror game, tentatively known as Project Heartbreak. It’s speculated that this game could potentially be the sequel to Until Dawn.

Guerrilla Games

The team behind the Killzone series was purchased by Sony after the launch of Shellshock: ‘Nam 67 in 2005. Now, one of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s most advanced studios, it gained notoriety for Horizon Zero Dawn, a game powered by its own Decima Engine.

The triumph of Returnal led to Sony purchasing the team in 2021.

At present, Housemarque is engaged in the development of their upcoming title. Whether it’s a follow-up to Returnal or an entirely fresh concept remains uncertain. It’s worth mentioning that Housemarque typically prefers to create new intellectual properties over sequels.

Media Molecule

Back in 2010, when Sackboy’s first big adventure took off, the creative minds behind LittleBigPlanet – Media Molecule – were scooped up by Sony. Yep, that’s right, they became a part of the Sony family!

Location: Guildford, England

Current Developments: Following the wrap-up of post-release assistance for Dreams, the team at Media Molecule has moved on to their subsequent venture – a brand-new intellectual property (IP). Regrettably, it seems we won’t get a sneak peek into this project for some time.

North America

A majority of Sony’s most renowned studios originate from the United States, with an added team from Canada thrown into the mix as well!

Bend Studio

Known for developing Bubsy 3D for the PlayStation 1 initially, later they were associated with the Syphon Filter series under the name Eidetic. They were bought by Sony in 2000. Primarily concentrating on portable games, they returned to AAA gaming with Days Gone on PS4.

Location: Bend, Oregon, USA

Present Works-in-Progress: At this moment, we are aware that Bend Studio is developing a fresh open-world title, however, it’s confirmed that it won’t be a follow-up to Days Gone.

Bluepoint Games

At present, it seems that Bluepoint Studios were developing a live-service, online game, but unfortunately, this project has been terminated. As a result, we can’t predict with certainty what their next project might be.

Haven Studios

Under the leadership of renowned game developer Jade Raymond, who is known for her contributions to the Assassin’s Creed and Watch Dogs franchises, a fresh studio is making waves in the gaming industry. Although they have yet to launch their first game, Sony has already taken notice and welcomed this team into their ranks as they prepare to debut their inaugural project.

In progress at Haven: Creation of Fairgame$, an engaging online multiplayer shooting game that offers a thrilling, competitive heist adventure.

Insomniac Games

Known for creating exclusive PlayStation series like Ratchet & Clank and Resistance, this developer has always seemed to belong among the leading in-house studios. With Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales achieving massive success, it’s not surprising that Sony acquired the studio in 2019.

Location: Burbank, California, USA

As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to share that I’m currently immersed in bringing Marvel’s Wolverine to life, exclusively on the PS5. There’s also a tantalizing whisper about a multiplayer game in the works, though details are still under wraps. And if the rumors are true, it seems like Spider-Man 3 might be in the early stages of swinging into action as well!

Naughty Dog

Known for its illustrious past, Naughty Dog – one of Sony’s prestigious studios – has been instrumental in producing enduring series like Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, and The Last of Us since the early 2000s. It was acquired by Sony in 2001.

Location: Santa Monica, California, USA

At the moment, Naughty Dog is engaged in creating an interstellar action-adventure title called “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.”

Currently, Naughty Dog is developing the sci-fi action adventure game titled “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
