As a long-time gamer and a proud owner of the PlayStation VR2 headset, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the day when I could expand my gaming library beyond what’s currently available on the PS5. The news that Steam compatibility is coming to PlayStation VR2 on August 6th is a welcome relief for me and many other adopters who have felt frustrated by the lack of support and limited game offerings since the peripheral’s launch in early 2023.
Starting from next month, Steam will support PlayStation VR2 for playing Virtual Reality games. For this, users need to download a specific app, which will be available from August 6th. However, it is important to note that the actual play of VR games on the headset won’t begin until the day after, as the PlayStation VR2 PC adapter goes on sale on August 7th for $59.99. This adapter is essential to run VR games not available on PS5. The official Steam page has already been set up and reveals the release date.
After finishing the setup process, the PlayStation VR2 application needs to stay installed on your computer for you to keep playing Steam VR games. Luckily, using the app doesn’t incur an additional cost. Given the expenses PlayStation VR2 users have already made, this is a welcome news! As a PlayStation VR2 owner and avid gamer, I’ve been feeling quite disappointed with the limited game library available for my new headset. Ever since its launch in early 2023, there have been concerns about insufficient support, resulting in slow sales. For those of us who invested in this technology, it’s been a frustrating experience, leaving us questioning the future of our hardware investment. The situation has been disheartening, especially considering the hefty price tag – $549.99 for the VR2 headset itself, plus the cost of a PS5 and an adapter to use it with Steam.
The effect of Steam compatibility on PlayStation VR2 sales is something worth exploring. Some consumers might be attracted to the possibility of playing popular Steam games such as “Half-Life: Alyx,” “Fallout 4 VR,” and “War Thunder,” in addition to exclusive titles like “Horizon Call of the Mountain.” However, given that there are more affordable VR alternatives available, it remains to be seen if PlayStation can overcome this challenge.
