PlayStation x Call of Duty Partnership Finally Over After 9 Years

As a longtime fan who’s been through the trenches of every Call of Duty game since the original, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia tinged with anticipation as we bid farewell to the historic partnership between Sony and Activision’s flagship franchise.

The long-standing collaboration between PlayStation and Call of Duty has concluded. This game series is a money-making powerhouse that consistently outperforms other titles, except when Rockstar Games or the exceptional 2023 release of Hogwarts Legacy comes along. Despite these rare exceptions, it remains unrivaled in sales, and its success story is only interrupted by extraordinary events that break records. Given its impressive stature, many companies are eager to associate with Call of Duty. Over the years, Mountain Dew, Doritos, Monster, Totinos, Little Caesars, among others, have all partnered with Call of Duty for extensive marketing campaigns tied to their annual game releases.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve always noticed that the most significant collaboration for Call of Duty has been with the platform it chooses to seal a costly deal with. Before Microsoft took over Activision for a staggering $70 billion, Xbox had already built a strong bond with Call of Duty dating back years.

In a clever marketing move, Sony’s PlayStation secured exclusive rights for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. This advantage led to early release of map packs for PlayStation users and priority access to beta tests for several years. However, when Call of Duty switched to providing free seasonal content instead of map packs, PlayStation players received unique operators and packages that weren’t available on Xbox and PC for an entire year. Eventually, these exclusives became less significant as the next Call of Duty game was released, and players tend to move on from games once a new one comes out.

As a devoted fan, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the news about the future of Call of Duty’s partnership with PlayStation following Microsoft’s acquisition promise. And finally, the day has come! According to CharlieIntel, the exclusivity of PlayStation operator and combat packs for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III ended on November 9th. While it’s not clear exactly when we can expect to see it on Xbox and PC, one thing is certain – this marks the end of the partnership between Call of Duty and PlayStation. This was the last piece of exclusive content between the two giants.

Indeed, there’s a slight exception to this rule: “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” comes free of charge for subscribers of Xbox Game Pass on both Xbox and PC platforms. This advantage is quite substantial compared to PlayStation, yet it’s something we anticipated and likely the main reason Microsoft was ready to pour a significant amount of money into Activision. The game’s recent release has broken records for both Xbox and Call of Duty, with impressive numbers in Xbox Game Pass subscriptions and high player counts for “Black Ops 6”. This success seems sufficient to keep Microsoft content without any urge for additional exclusive content. Furthermore, this means that Xbox can once again showcase the first gameplay of new Call of Duty games at its E3 events in the coming years.
