PlayStation’s Solar-Powered Controller Patent Might Help with Battery Life Woes

Based on a newly disclosed patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment, it appears they are exploring the concept of powering controllers through solar energy.

As reported by Tech4Gamers, the patent appears quite simple – a controller featuring solar panels (or photovoltaic elements) that can harness sunlight and convert it into electrical energy, thereby powering your gaming console.

The DualSense PS5 controller features in the tech drawings as an example.

In theory, this would allow for wireless charging of the controllers, possibly even enabling them to charge as you play, subject to where you’re gaming from.

It seems that addressing the issue of the relatively short battery life on the DualSense controller for the PS5 could provide a significant improvement.

Clearly, similar to other patents, this doesn’t mean a tangible product is currently available – it’s still in the development stage. If Sony chooses to advance this concept, there’s a possibility we might see solar-charged pads in the future.

It appears as though the concept is quite impressive on the surface, but we’ll let Sony tackle the practicalities of turning it into reality.

Share your thoughts on the possibility of a solar-charged PlayStation controller, which may be several years off, if it ever comes to fruition. Feel free to voice your opinions in the comments below.
