2025’s gaming season could have gotten off to an exciting start with the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC, but unfortunately, it hasn’t garnered the warm reception many were expecting.
As a tech enthusiast, I’m personally diving into the installation process of this game on both my desktop and portable PCs. A quick glance at Steam, however, reveals that the recent transition of the PlayStation’s flagship title from console to PC seems to have encountered some bumps along the way.
The Steam reviews for this game are currently categorized as “Mixed,” which is quite different from the “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating that Spider-Man Remastered has, or the “Very Positive” feedback given to Spider-Man: Miles Morales. So, it seems there might be some issues with this game that are causing a mixed response among players.
Primarily, the challenges lie in visual aspects. The game Spider-Man 2 requires significant resources if you aim to max out details and incorporate ray tracing, yet it’s user-friendly for beginners. However, certain critiques paint a rather dismal picture.
Here are a selection of the negative reviews detailing what’s going on.
It would be wise to wait for a few software updates to fix some instability issues, as this game is currently experiencing significant problems. To call it ‘rough’ would be an understatement. The lighting fails to load in certain cutscenes, these scenes run extremely slowly, there are audio synchronization problems galore, freezing, stuttering, and just about every other performance issue one can imagine.
It seems like the game is experiencing frequent crashes every 10 minutes on this PC version. This could be due to outdated drivers, settings that exceed your GPU’s capacity, an overheating GPU, or a problem with the game itself. I suggest you update your graphics drivers or lower your in-game settings for smoother performance.
I was really looking forward to this game, but I have to say that despite its engaging gameplay, the quality of the port leaves much to be desired. The DLSS feature appears to malfunction, leading to noticeable dithering on hair and shadows during ray-traced scenes. Additionally, there’s a substantial 7% cost for ray reconstruction on my 4070, which seems unusual. I find myself needing Frame Generation to prevent CPU-related issues. To top it off, the game has crashed on me no less than five times within an hour.
Essentially, the game is virtually impossible to run smoothly unless you’re willing to invest an additional £3000 in a new graphics card. Even at the lowest settings on an RTX 4090, it’s still not playable. You might want to hold off for a stability patch or just save your money instead.
Additionally, there have been instances where users have encountered uncommon VRAM consumption, and adjusting in-game settings may lead to crashes.
Or simply:
Some users have experienced strange VRAM behavior, and sometimes modifying in-game settings could result in a crash.
It appears that the lack of communication from Nixxes, the Sony studio handling the port, as well as Insomniac, the original creators of the game, might be causing frustration among those experiencing these issues.
At this moment, it could be wise to wait before making a purchase, as some necessary improvements are yet to be rolled out. Given the high caliber of the initial PC games, I am confident they’ll correct the issues; however, it’s disappointing to witness another highly anticipated game released seemingly prematurely. Players and Spider-Man deserve better quality.
