It’s common to notice an increase in player numbers when a game is included as part of a subscription service, and this holds true for both PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass.
Nevertheless, even though Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was launched as a part of Microsoft’s services, many gamers are still purchasing the game via Sony’s platform.
According to analyst firm Ampere, as shared by The Game Business, approximately 30% of role-playing game (RPG) enthusiasts play on PlayStation 5, while around 45% prefer Xbox Series X|S, with the remaining 25% opting for PC.
It’s important to note that this data pertains exclusively to “major European markets”, the United States, Canada, and Australia. Consequently, it does not encompass all of Asia.
One intriguing detail, however, is that players using the PS5 are spending more time on the game, with an average playtime of 4.4 hours versus 2.2 hours for those using Xbox Series X.
It’s clear that as the number of players increases, the average playtime tends to decrease, but this also indicates that those who purchased the game at full price might be more committed to playing it.
Indeed, Microsoft added The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered to their subscription last week, and it currently boasts the largest player base among these platforms. To be specific, about 47% of players have experienced the Bethesda re-release on Xbox Series X|S, while 33% are playing it on Steam, and a slightly smaller group, approximately 19%, are enjoying it on PS5.
Even though these developments are happening, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella notes that U.S. subscription spending has remained unchanged since the year 2021. Moreover, Microsoft has failed to release any new data regarding its subscriber count for more than a year now.
There’s still considerable debate about the lasting success of Game Pass, but it’s clear that consumers continue to buy a significant amount of software for the PlayStation 5.
