Pluto, Monster Creator Pays Tribute To David Lynch

This week, I’ve been reflecting on the loss of one of cinema’s most visionary directors – David Lynch – who left us at the venerable age of 78. Known for groundbreaking works such as Eraserhead, Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive, and many more, his influence transcended the Western film industry. Even in Japan, where anime is a beloved art form, creators like Naoki Urasawa are mourning Lynch’s passing. To pay tribute to him, Urasawa unveiled some exceptional artwork that reimagined Lynch in his signature manga style.

David Lynch’s family announced his passing through an Instagram post, where they expressed their sadness about losing both the man and the artist. The message concluded with Lynch’s own words: “Keep your eye on the donut, not the hole. It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.” They also asked for privacy at this difficult time, acknowledging that there is now a void left by his absence.

Urawasa’s Tribute To David Lynch

Naoki Urasawa recently posted on social media a tribute piece he originally created to honor director David Lynch, who has passed away. In his own artistic style, Urasawa paid respect to the late filmmaker. The message accompanying the artwork read: “Thank you, David Lynch, for all the wonderful works I cherish. I’m reposting a drawing I made some time ago.

Hollywood Mourns

Apart from Urasawa, other notable figures in the entertainment world also expressed their thoughts about the influential director. Kyle MacLachlan, who starred in Twin Peaks, penned a touching statement about his relationship with Lynch. He stated, “Four decades ago, I’m still puzzled as to why, David Lynch picked me from obscurity to lead his first and only major production. He saw potential in me that even I wasn’t aware of. My entire career, and indeed my life, are indebted to his vision. Looking back, what struck me about him was a mysterious and intuitive individual with an immense creative wellspring bubbling within.

2024 saw Lynch publicly disclose his Emphysema diagnosis, which confined him to homebound living against his will. He explained, “I’m essentially housebound, unable to go out. I can barely walk a short distance before running out of breath due to my emphysema. Yes, it’s a result of my long-term smoking habit. I must admit that I found great pleasure in smoking and appreciate tobacco – the aroma, lighting cigarettes, puffing on them – but there is always a cost for such enjoyment, and for me, it’s emphysema.
