Pokemon Game Announcements Teased for World Championship Weekend

As a lifelong Pokemon fan who’s seen the evolution of these adorable creatures since their debut, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation with each passing moment as we approach the closing ceremonies of this year’s World Championships. The tease from Tsunekazu Ishihara about some “special news” for Pokemon games has me reminiscing about the excitement that followed last year’s event, which brought us new DLC, fresh additions to the TCG, and exciting updates for Pokemon Unite.

As the 2024 Pokémon World Championships kick off, enthusiasts can anticipate a mix of competitive events and incentives such as in-game bonuses and freebies for titles like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Pokémon Go, and others. Given the success of last year’s World Championship, this comes as no surprise. However, if you attended the previous event, you’ll know that there are even more exciting developments to come once the 2024 World Championships draw to a close. Over the weekend, Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company, hinted at this during the event’s start, promising a special announcement about Pokémon games during the closing ceremonies.

As I stood before the eager crowd at the 2024 Pokemon World Championships opening, I couldn’t help but feel gratitude for this vibrant gaming community. The fact that we were gathered in Hawaii for these competitive events made it all the more special. Before parting ways, I gave a little sneak peek into what lies ahead, keeping everyone on their toes!

Currently, trainers, let’s concentrate on the upcoming contest first, and I will reunite with you all during the closing events on Sunday evening when I will reveal some exciting updates for our Pokémon games, shared Ishihara.

To provide some background about what could occur during the upcoming closing ceremonies, let me share an example from last year’s Pokemon World Championships finale. The grand conclusion featured a sneak peek at the second DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. At that time, it was also disclosed that Paradox Pokémon would be incorporated into the Pokémon Trading Card Game. For Pokémon Unite, Blaziken, Mimikyu, and Meowscarada were officially added to the game. Similarly, last year’s closing ceremony unveiled the location for the 2024 World Championships. So, we can anticipate a similar announcement during this weekend’s event.

It’s clear that no Downloadable Content (DLC) is imminent for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet at the moment, but Pokemon Unite is continuing to get fresh content, suggesting there might be updates or news about it during this weekend’s closing ceremony too. Additionally, we could potentially hear more about the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) as well. As for a long shot, one may hope for some additional details on Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the upcoming mainline Pokemon games announced earlier in 2022, although specifics regarding these games remain scarce. It’s speculated that they might not be released until late next year.
