On the same February day, it’s anticipated that both The Pokémon Company’s Pokémon Presents event and a separate Pokémon Direct will occur. It’s likely that the latter will reveal a new game in the Pokémon series. As per Jeff Grubb, these upcoming games will be categorized as “Switch 1” titles instead of being specifically developed for the supposed Switch 2.
In simpler terms, according to Grubb, the content presented during the Pokémon Direct will be marketed as games for the original Nintendo Switch. While these games will also function on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, they are primarily designed for the first version of the console and won’t have any features specifically tailored for the Switch 2.
It’s anticipated that Pokémon Legends: Z-A will be the next big game within the franchise. This title was initially unveiled in February 2024, and given its 2025 expected release date, it seems poised to take center stage during this year’s Pokémon Presents event.
In a preview, it’s been announced that Pokémon Legends: Z-A will include Lumiose City as part of its setting. The game appears to focus on the construction and development of this city, which is shown undergoing renovations in the trailer. Players are expected to contribute to the city-building process, aiming to create a harmonious living space where both humans and Pokémon can coexist peacefully.
Apart from Pokémon Legends: Arzurum, no fresh Pokémon game announcements have been made so far. The latest mainline entries in the series were Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, released despite some technical glitches during launch. However, these issues didn’t seem to hinder their success, with sales exceeding 8.3 million copies in Japan alone – a figure that surpasses even the initial sales of the franchise’s first games, Pokémon Red and Green.
Just like other major releases within the Pokémon series, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set to launch exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. But here’s an interesting twist: due to the backward compatibility feature of the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2, players will also have the option to enjoy this game on their brand new hardware!
