As someone who has been capturing Pokemon since the days of Red and Blue, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia as we dive headfirst into the Galar region with the latest update for Pokemon Go. The prospect of Dynamaxing my beloved Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle is enough to make this old trainer jump for joy!
Yesterday’s announcement unveiled that the upcoming season of Pokemon Go will heavily feature the Galar region from Pokemon Sword and Shield. Over the past month, hints have been dropped, but today, it was officially confirmed that the Dynamax mechanic is coming to the game. As seen in Sword and Shield, Dynamax Pokemon are enlarged versions of familiar characters from the series. Starting in September, players will discover new locations marked as Power Spots on their in-game map, similar to PokeStops. At these spots, players can collect Max Particles and find Dynamax Pokemon. Beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 10th, Max Battle encounters will commence, with one-star Max Battles featuring the following Pokemon:
- Bulbasaur
- Charmander
- Squirtle
- Skwovet
- Wooloo
In the upcoming battles, if trainers manage to capture certain Pokemon during Max Battles, they’ll have the ability to Dynamax them in future Max Battles. Besides the Dynamax feature, the new season will introduce a variety of Pokemon that were initially introduced in Sword and Shield. Niantic has hinted at some of these Pokemon in the game’s anniversary artwork from July, and we can now verify that the Galar starters – Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble – will all be making an appearance. Research focused on the Galarian starters will start at the beginning of the season. Additionally, trainers should anticipate the introduction of Dreepy, a Dragon/Ghost-type Pokemon, and his evolutions.
Pokémon from the games “Pokémon Sword and Shield” have seldom appeared in “Pokémon Go.” Only a few Galarian Pokémon like Wooloo, Falinks, Mr. Ryme, and others were introduced years ago. Yet, since then, there’s been more focus on content from “Pokémon Sun and Moon,” and even “Scarlet and Violet.” It appears that the landscape is shifting indeed!
Hopefully this new Dynamax mechanic will prove an exciting one in Pokemon Go. The whole Dynamax concept originated on Nintendo Switch because the idea was that, with the ability to play on a TV screen unlike past mainline games, the action should get a little bigger. It’s hard to say how well the concept will be conveyed on a phone screen, but there’s an opportunity for Niantic to expand Pokemon Go in a unique and exciting way. The current Pokemon Go season will end on September 3rd, so we can likely expect more information in the very near future!
