Pokemon Go Player’s Gym Struggle Highlights Major Issue That Needs Fixing

As a seasoned Pokémon Go player with countless hours under my belt, I can’t help but share my two cents about this lingering issue that has left many of us, including myself, in a state of frustration. The Gym system is a fantastic feature for earning Poke Coins, but the lack of a recall option for our beloved Pokémon can lead to some rather lengthy separations.

Leaving your Pokemon at a Gym is an effective method for gathering Poke Coins within the game Pokemon Go, however, it often results in annoyance. Your Pokemon stays at the Gym until it gets defeated, but if no one from the opposing team challenges that particular Gym, it can remain there almost forever. There’s no option to bring your Pokemon back, and if you place one in a gym while traveling or on vacation, it becomes significantly more challenging to retrieve that Pokemon until someone defeats it. In certain extreme situations, this could take several months!

In a similar scenario, a user named Itsalwayssunnyd from the Pokemon Go subreddit experienced an issue when they left their Gyarados at the local Fire Department in Bridgeport, Nebraska during a weekend visit. When their Pokemon didn’t return home, they turned to the Reddit community for assistance. Fortunately, their plea was seen by a Reddit user nearby, who went to the fire department and defeated the Gyarados, enabling it to make its way back home safely.

While this story did get a happy ending, it does highlight a frustrating issue with Pokemon Go. In many cases, Gym turnover can be pretty high; anyone that has ever played the game at a theme park like Disneyland or Universal Studios knows how quickly a Pokemon can end up knocked out and sent back to the user. However, there are times where more than a week can go by, if you play in an area where the game is less popular. It’s easy to see how this can lead to a lot of frustration for players that might not realize how little turnover there is at that particular location. If you put a Pokemon in a Gym thinking it’ll be back within 24 hours and it’s gone for weeks, that can cause headaches when it comes to other aspects of the game, like pvp battles.

It’s uncertain why Niantic hasn’t included a “recall” feature in Pokemon Go, but it might be because they want Gyms to remain a competitive aspect of the game. If players could quickly take back their Pokemon from Gyms, they would likely do so once they hit the 50 Poke Coin daily limit. By making players wait for a Gym turnover, it encourages more competition to secure and keep the spot. However, there should be some balance; options like automatically returning Pokemon to the player after a set time or giving the player the choice to recall them could work. Here’s hoping that Niantic finds a solution to this issue soon!
