As a dedicated Pokemon fan since the early days of Red and Blue, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Gold and Silver. These games were my gateway to the world of Johto, introducing me to legendary beasts Ho-Oh and Lugia long before their epic battles in the anime. The new plushies based on these iconic Pokemon are a delightful addition to my collection, their gold and silver color schemes a charming nod to their origins.
25 years ago, Pokemon Gold and Silver made their debut on Nintendo’s Game Boy, marking the second major installment of the franchise. To commemorate this occasion, The Pokemon Company has unveiled some fresh merchandise inspired by the Legendary Pokemon Ho-Oh and Lugia. On the Pokemon Center website, you can now purchase plush toys modeled after the cover characters from Gold and Silver, each priced at $49.99. In a unique touch, these plushies feature gold and silver color schemes instead of their usual hues, as a tribute to the games where Ho-Oh and Lugia first appeared.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but share my excitement over the impressive sizes of the Ho-Oh and Lugia plushies! Standing tall at 15.75 inches, Ho-Oh is quite a sight, while Lugia towers even higher at 17.25 inches. These Pokémon make for fantastic display pieces, whether you choose to showcase them individually or together. For those eager to add these giants to their collection, look no further! You can find Ho-Oh and Lugia right here and here on the Pokémon Center website.
Back in the day, when I was embarking on my Pokémon Gold and Silver adventure, Ho-Oh and Lugia were already familiar faces. You see, I’d caught a glimpse of Ho-Oh way back at the start of my journey with Pikachu, right there on the very first episode of the Pokémon series. And then, Lugia made its grand entrance in the animated movie “The Power of One”. It was quite a spectacle, with Lugia being the main character in that storyline. So by the time I got my hands on those games, I felt like I knew these Legendary Pokémon already, thanks to their earlier appearances in the anime.
Currently, it’s uncertain whether there will be any additional celebrations for the anniversary of Pokemon Gold and Silver. These games are highly respected by Pokemon enthusiasts due to numerous reasons. The second generation of Pokemon introduced players to the new Johto region, which was home to 100 new Pokemon, such as Scizor, Tyranitar, and Feraligatr. Gold and Silver also offered a substantial post-game quest that allowed players to revisit the Kanto region and challenge popular Gym Leaders like Brock and Misty once more. The games also introduced the idea of Shiny Pokemon, a feature that has significantly impacted the collecting experience since then.
Regrettably, it’s not possible to play Pokemon Gold and Silver on current systems. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of these games, remakes called Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver were introduced for Nintendo DS. However, neither the original nor the remade versions can be played on the Nintendo Switch. It’s quite unfortunate, but perhaps this issue will be addressed in the future.
