Pokemon Legends: Z-A Brings Back Major Feature Not Seen Since Emerald

The game “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” is expected to launch towards the end of 2025 on both the Nintendo Switch and its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2. This upcoming release will introduce a feature that Pokémon enthusiasts have not encountered since “Pokémon Emerald,” which was last seen in games released for the Game Boy Advance in 2004. As such, numerous Pokémon games including “Pokémon Scarlet and Violet,” “Pokémon Sword and Shield,” and many others have lacked this specific feature until now. While it’s uncertain whether this addition signifies a new standard moving forward, it’s undoubtedly a welcome change for Pokémon fans.

60 frames per second (FPS) has not been a constant feature in mainline Pokémon games since Pokémon Emerald. However, some battle sequences in Generation 5 (Pokémon Black and White, as well as their sequels) ran at 60 FPS. Now, it’s being promoted that the entire game in Pokémon Legends: Z-A will be 60 FPS.

We can’t predict how smoothly the game will run at 60 frames per second (FPS). If it experiences frequent frame drops and performance issues, then increasing the FPS might not be beneficial. In fact, a steady 30 FPS can feel more fluid than a game with an inconsistent frame rate that has constant drops. As of now, Game Freak and Nintendo haven’t specified whether or not the game will run at a locked 60 FPS. It seems unlikely that it does.

It’s uncertain if Pokemon Legends: Z-A will become the norm for future Pokemon games on the Nintendo Switch 2. However, given its ambitious nature, it seems likely that we may see similar standards in upcoming titles. Yet, neither Game Freak nor Nintendo have explicitly promised this change.
