As a long-time fan who’s been following Ash Ketchum’s journey since I was a kid, it’s hard not to feel a pang of nostalgia as I see Netflix setting an expiration date for the latest Pokemon series. It feels like just yesterday when I was eagerly waiting for each new episode to drop, filling up my VHS tapes (yes, I’m that old) with each adventure.
“Pokemon is undeniably one of the most significant anime franchises ever. It has dominated various sectors such as merchandising, video games, and TV shows. Given this, Netflix aims to be the go-to platform for many old Pokemon episodes and the exclusive home for the latest series, Pokemon Horizons. However, it appears that fans of these pocket monsters might need to watch the newer series immediately because Netflix has set expiration dates for the anime adaptations.”
The anime series titled ‘Pokemon’ boasts more than one thousand episodes, with the majority following Ash Ketchum’s quest to become the world’s top Pokemon trainer. In an unexpected move, the latest season, ‘Pokemon Journeys’, chose to step away from featuring Ash and Pikachu as the main characters. After many years guiding the show, Ash finally achieved his goal of becoming the Pokemon World Champion. However, in reaching this milestone, he recognized that there’s still a lot more travel ahead for him to fully attain the title of a “Pokemon Master”. If you haven’t yet watched Ash’s concluding episodes, it would be wise to start soon to keep pace with his ongoing journey.
Pokemon’s Expiration Date
Based on information from Netflix’s site, several recently-aired Pokémon anime series are scheduled to depart the platform on October 7th (next month). Here are some of the affected shows:
- Pokemon Journeys: The Series
- Pokemon Master Journeys: The Series
- Pokemon Ultimate Journeys: The Series
- Pokemon: To Be A Pokemon Masters: Ultimate Journeys The Series
Fortunately, it seems like Pokemon Horizons isn’t slated for expiration on the same date as its predecessors. Earlier this year, Netflix had initially listed these series as expiring in March, but later erased the “expiration dates” related to the anime adaptations. Unfortunately, many past Pokemon series can be found on different streaming platforms, and some aren’t available for viewing anywhere in North America. Here’s hoping that Pokemon enthusiasts will hear some positive updates regarding Journeys soon.
