Pokémon star Rachael Lillis, who voiced Misty and Jessie, dies aged 46

As a long-time admirer of the magical world that Pokémon has created and the talented individuals who have brought those characters to life, I find myself deeply saddened by the news of Rachael Lillis’s passing. Having grown up with her iconic voices of Misty and Jessie filling my Saturday mornings and after-school hours, it feels like a piece of my childhood has been lost.

Rachel Lillis, who voiced several Pokémon characters like Jessie and Misty in the initial TV show and movies, passed away at age 46 following a fight against cancer.

On Monday morning, August 12th, it was revealed by Veronic Taylor, Lillis’s fellow actor in the Pokémon series, that she had sadly passed away.

With great sadness, I announce the unfortunate demise of Rachael Lillis that occurred last Saturday, 10th August 2024. This is the news Taylor, known for voicing the primary character Ash Ketchum, shared on Twitter, formerly known as X.

Rachael was remarkably gifted, her voice radiated brilliance whether she spoke or sang. Her memory lives on through the numerous lively characters she portrayed, with her unforgettable depictions of Pokémon’s Misty and Jessie being particularly cherished.

She went on to say: “Rachael felt incredibly grateful for the abundant kindness and aid she received during her fight against cancer. It undeniably had a positive impact. Her family also wants to express their gratitude, as they now choose to mourn in seclusion. A memorial service is being organized for a later time.”

Everyone’s familiar with Rachel Lillis due to her captivating performances across various roles. During our weekend mornings and pre-and-post school time, she graced us with her melodious voice, hilarious timing, and exceptional acting prowess. #RachaelLillis

In 1998, the character Misty, a gym leader with expertise in water-based Pokémon, was voiced by Lillis in the initial Pokémon anime series.

Apart from that, she was famously recognized for lending her voice to Jessie, a member of the notorious duo Team Rocket, partnered with her colleague James, and their vocal Pokémon companion, Meowth.

Lillis is known for lending her voice to characters such as Intress from Chaotic, Jigglypuff in Pokémon, Thalia in Shadow of the Elves, Faragonda in Winx Club, Ohno in Genshiken, Martina in Slayers Next, and Ursula in Dinosaur King, among others.

In May, it was announced through a GoFundMe campaign that the actor Lillis had been diagnosed with cancer and had been residing in a nursing home in Los Angeles since the end of January for medical treatment.

As a fortunate movie enthusiast, I had the privilege of calling Rachael my cherished friend. Her wellspring of kindness and compassion knew no bounds, right up until her final moments. Her humor was infectious, making her delightful company. Intelligence radiated from her in waves, and she possessed an extraordinary memory that left me in awe. She worked tirelessly and showed deep care for those around her.

Taylor shared in another tweet: “I was fortunate to call Rachael my friend. Her heart was filled with endless kindness and compassion right up until the end. She possessed a brilliant sense of humor, was delightful to be around, exceptionally intelligent, and had an exceptional memory. She worked diligently and cared passionately.”

I’m unsure how this profound emptiness will be filled now that her radiant presence is gone. Just as the Perseid meteors streak across the night sky, Rachael was a stunning spectacle and uniquely extraordinary. She blazed with brilliance and disappeared all too quickly. Her spirit will endure in our hearts forever.
