The arrival of new Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) expansions is usually an exciting moment for tabletop enthusiasts, but the latest Scarlet & Violet deck lists have generated significant buzz due to the engaging narratives woven into the Trainer’s cards. Since their absence from sets in the ’00s, these cards have piqued fans’ curiosity, as many are eager to discover how each character’s storyline will intertwine with the game. The “Destined Rivals” expansion intensifies this anticipation by reintroducing Team Rocket’s cards. In the “Destined Rivals” set, Cynthia, Ethan, and Arvan join forces to confront Giovanni, providing an excellent selection of cards to draw from.
Unlike Journey Together, which reintroduced Trainer cards in its English debut, players will have over 200 new cards to collect from this upcoming expansion. These cards can be found in standard ETBs, Pokemon Center ETBs, Booster Boxes, Booster Bundles, and individual booster packs. The fact that all pre-order options are currently sold out on the Pokemon Center website suggests that there’s already a lot of buzz surrounding this expansion.
To get players ready for the launch of Destined Rivals, here’s a rundown of all you need to know about the collection and its key characters.

In Destined Rivals, the legendary adversary, Giovanni from Kanto, makes his return alongside Team Rocket, stirring up trouble once more. This initial antagonist of the series has recurred in video games and anime seasons throughout the past three decades. Many devoted fans fondly remember his association with the powerful, Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo, making him a favorite among them.
In this scenario, joining forces to counter Giovanni are characters from various Pokemon series: Cynthia hails from Diamond and Pearl, Ethan is known from Gold and Silver, and Arvan is a newcomer from Scarlet and Violet. Among these companions, Cynthia stands out as the most beloved by Pokemon fans due to her recurring appearances in the anime and games. Similar to Giovanni, she has been a consistent ally to the heroes when they needed help. As the Sinnoh region’s Champion, you can often find her accompanied by her famous Garchomp.
Arvan is another thrilling choice for trainers in the Pokemon Trading Card Game. He’s gained a devoted fanbase due to his deep affection for Mabosstiff and compassionate demeanor. On the other hand, Ethan seems to be the lone figure here. Although he’s cherished by long-time gamers as a character from Johto, he might not resonate with newer audiences.
Will Jesse and James Be in Destined Rivals?
At this time, Jesse and James have not been confirmed as part of the Destined Rivals set.
Based on details provided by PokeBeach regarding the new set, it’s expected to include a Team Rocket’s Wobbuffet, likely serving as a nod to our cherished anime characters. However, thus far, only typical Team Rocket grunts have been officially confirmed for the set.
Will There Be New Ace Spec Trainer Cards in Destined Rivals?
Indeed, there are currently no announced Ace Spec cards in the works for Destined Rivals. As we approach the later stages of the Scarlet & Violet Pokémon Trading Card Game era, it remains uncertain if these cards will still feature prominently. This development might disappoint competitive players eager to explore fresh tactics.
Will There Be Mega Evolutions in Destined Rivals?
As a devoted fan, I must sadly share that Mega Evolution won’t be debuting in the Destined Rivals expansion, contrary to earlier speculations about its appearance in February 2025. Instead, it seems we’ll have to wait until later this year for this exciting new gimmick to materialize. This timing coincides with the release of Pokemon Legends: ZA, which suggests that the new mechanics might follow a similar pattern as Legends: Arceus did during the Sword and Shield era. In essence, it appears we’re approaching the final phase for the Trading Card Game before Gen 10 is officially announced.
Currently, only a small number of cards have been officially revealed for the Pokémon Trading Card Game’s Destined Rivals expansion. This guide will be updated as soon as we get details about the Trainer cards.
