For years, I’ve witnessed the lopsided matches that are all too common in this digital realm, and it’s high time for a change.
I remember the days when my heart would race as I flipped the coin to determine who goes first, only to find myself on the losing end more often than not. It’s not just me, though; many of my fellow trainers share this sentiment, and it has led some to concede defeat before the match even begins.
The current setup, where the player going second can swiftly take the lead with a well-timed attack while their opponent is left scrambling to catch up, leaves much to be desired. The stacking of Energy tokens on the Pokemon of the player going second can make all the difference in a game, particularly when it comes to quick power spikes like those exhibited by Pikachu EX.
It’s a bit ironic that a game as iconic and beloved as Pokemon TCG Pocket should be marred by such an imbalance. I understand the reasoning behind not allowing players to attack on their very first turn, but the current setup leaves little room for those who go first to catch up.
I’ve had my moments of glory when going first with a Water-based deck and pulling off a rare Articuno play, but such victories are few and far between. In most cases, it seems that the coin flip determines the match before the game has even begun.
In the spirit of fairness and balance, I strongly believe that the developers, DeNA and Creatures Inc., should reconsider the current setup for the opening turns in Pokemon TCG Pocket. A tweak to the rules could go a long way toward making this game truly enjoyable for all players.

In prolonged competitive play of the Pokemon TCG Pocket, it’s evident that the initial rounds often favor one player due to the actions permitted during the opening turns. The unique aspect here is that the player starting the game can play any cards from their hand but cannot utilize Energy tokens or launch an attack on their opponent. This gives the second player a distinct advantage as they get the first chance to attach Energy to their Pokemon, and then strike first.
In essence, it seems unfair to me that those who go first can’t launch an immediate attack, as this advantage would unduly favor the ones who happen to get Heads on the initial coin toss. The disadvantage of not being able to use Energy at all when going first feels unbalanced to me. This restriction allows the second player not only to initiate the opening attack but also to swiftly build up Energy for their Pokémon, which is often a crucial factor in determining who wins or loses in Pokemon TCG Pocket, particularly when it comes to decks focused on Pokémon like Pikachu EX that experience rapid power surges.
Although it may not appear significant at first glance, I’ve played numerous (possibly hundreds) of games in Pokemon TCG Pocket, and I’ve often found myself confused about my strategy, all because I started the match first. This is a common sentiment among players of Pokemon TCG Pocket. In fact, many players choose to forfeit immediately when they see that it’s their turn to go first due to the perceived disadvantage.
In specific scenarios, starting the game with a Water-type deck can potentially backfire due to its nature. If by chance you draw an Articuno and a Misty trainer card in your initial hand, you can swiftly strengthen your legendary bird, concluding the match before it’s even properly started. Such instances are quite exceptional, but I have managed to pull it off on occasion.
Moving on, it seems to me that the developers DeNA and Creatures Inc. might need to adjust the initial phases of matches in the Pokemon TCG Pocket game for a more balanced experience. Currently, the game doesn’t appear well-balanced, especially when I often lose games where I start first. While I can accept a large portion of the game being based on coin flips, the fact that I consistently lose when going first suggests an issue.
