As someone who has spent countless hours catching ’em all, from the humble Pidgey to the legendary Mewtwo, I must say, the similarities between certain Pokémon and their counterparts in Palworld are quite striking. While I understand that game developers often draw inspiration from various sources, it’s hard not to raise an eyebrow when you see a Boltmane that looks like a Shiny Luxray or an Electabuzz doppelgänger named Grizzbolt.
Nintendo together with The Pokemon Company have officially filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair, the developer of the game Palworld. For quite some time now, this move has been anticipated since The Pokemon Company started investigating Palworld back in January due to an overwhelming number of similarities between the games. However, many players of both Palworld and Pokemon had hoped that these two entities would somehow peacefully coexist given the prolonged silence on the matter. Notably, Nintendo is known for taking aggressive legal action to safeguard its properties, so this lawsuit, in light of the circumstances, might not come as a shock.
The legal action asserts that Palworld violates several patent claims, but it remains uncertain which patents Nintendo and The Pokemon Company are specifically accusing of being breached. Given that no copyright infringements were cited, it appears less probable that the two companies are targeting the creators of Palworld due to similarities in the appearance of certain Palworld creatures and iconic Pokemon from their established series.
As a passionate admirer, I must admit that while the legal action may not directly involve it, the parallels drawn between Pals and Pokémon were instrumental in stirring my initial excitement for Palworld. Additional features like guns, crafting, and more certainly amplified this anticipation, but it would be unjust to Poketpair to deny the striking resemblance between Pals and Pokémon. It’s an observation that’s hard to overlook.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to admit that some of the comparisons between games like Palworld and Pokémon can be a bit of a reach at times. If you look side by side, it’s not impossible to see a resemblance, but let’s face it, there aren’t an infinite number of monster-catching concepts out there. However, I must say that there have been certain Palworld vs. Pokémon comparisons that have raised quite a few eyebrows:
Lucario vs. Anubis
To begin with, the well-liked Pokemon, Lucario, is paired alongside his counterpart from Palworld, named Anubis. In the world of Pokemon, Lucario is classified as a Fighting and Steel type, whereas Anubis is categorized as a Ground Pal. Despite their differences in types, the resemblance between these two characters physically is striking. Various games portray Anubis differently due to the mythology associated with him; however, the likeness to Lucario was immediately noted by players.
Clodsire vs. Dumud
In the Pokemon series, Clodsire didn’t make its debut until Generation 9 with the launch of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. When Palworld was subsequently released, players found the resemblance to Dumud quite evident due to the novelty of the new Pokemon. The distinct differences between their fins and aquatic forms notwithstanding, both creatures share the Ground type and have a similar playful character, making it difficult for fans to overlook the comparison.
Decidueye vs. Robinquill
One trick Pokemon has loved to pull recently is to make certain Pokemon have types that contradict their designs. Take Decidueye for example, a Grass and Ghost Pokemon that looks like a bird. Flying types are naturally good against Grass Pokemon, so it’s a clever twist on the usual formula. Unfortunately for Palworld‘s Robinquill which also happens to be a Grass type avian creature, with a grassy “hood” just like Decidueye, this particular trick is one people had already seen by the time Palworld released.
Luxray vs. Boltmane
The comparison between Luxray and Boltmane serves as an intriguing angle in the discussion of Pokemon versus Palworld, with opinions varying on which is the most questionable. Both are electric beings modeled after lions, with the version shown here being orange and black, while the original Boltmane was black with yellow markings to denote its type, remarkably similar to a Shiny Luxray. Interestingly, Boltmane never made it into Palworld and remains unattainable even today, despite initial appearances in trailers that have since been made private. It’s common for games to abandon ideas before release, but many Palworld players argue that given the striking similarity between Boltmane and Luxray, its inclusion in the game might not have been justified.
Electabuzz vs. Grizzbolt
Despite other Pokemon having similar Electric types and physical appearances such as Zeraora and Toxtricity, Electabuzz remains the original, bipedal Electric Pokemon, dating back to Generation 1. Its long-standing status may have made players less receptive to Grizzbolt. Although the boss Pal has a more robust build and a menacing appearance compared to Electabuzz, the humanoid shape, shared type, and lightning emblems are still hard to overlook.
Zebstrika vs. Unibolt
Regardless if you refer to them as horses, unicorns, or a blend of the two, it’s hard to find anything unique about their resemblance that isn’t immediately apparent when comparing them directly. They share a horse-like appearance, incorporate lightning motifs in their designs, belong to the Electric type, and prominently display “horns” symbolizing their types.
Wooloo vs. Lamball
To conclude, we find Wooloo from Pokemon alongside Lamball from Palworld. Since sheep are generally perceived as cute, one could argue that Palworld might also have its own capturable version of this animal. While Wooloo and Lamball share some similarities, they aren’t too striking. However, Lamball has been prominently featured in Palworld trailers and is often one of the first Pals players encounter during gameplay. This repeated exposure may have led players to notice its resemblance to Wooloo, despite the differences.
