A German pizzeria was raided by local police after they were tipped off that the restaurant was allegedly serving customers their orders with a side of cocaine.
A restaurant, found in the western German city of Düsseldorf, is accused of providing customers with an illegal substance when they requested dish number 40 from the menu, according to reports by The Guardian on October 22, based on police statements.
According to Chief Inspector Michael Graf von Moltke, one of the top-selling pizzas was reported, as shared by the media. This revelation was unexpected for us since the pizza shop owner had never previously faced allegations related to drug offenses.
Initial reports about the suspected illicit activity were made to authorities by food inspectors in March. This prompted drug enforcement agents to keep tabs on the restaurant. The incident at the apartment of the restaurant manager occurred when police arrived to apprehend him, whereupon it’s said that he allegedly tossed a bag containing drugs out the window. Remarkably, this package supposedly landed directly into the hands of the officers, as stated by Düsseldorf law enforcement.
Within the apartment, law enforcement officials reportedly discovered approximately 1.6 kilograms of cocaine, around 400 grams of cannabis, and €268,000 (equivalent to roughly US$288,976) in cash, along with various weapons such as a handgun, an axe, and multiple knives, according to The Guardian.
After being freed from jail, the unidentified pizzeria manager started offering the substance-laced combination once more, as reported by The Guardian. This action enabled the authorities to follow his supply line back to a 22-year-old Russian mixed martial arts fighter, whom police suspect was dealing illicit substances and assaulting competing dealers.
A man under accusation for abducting a competitor dealer as well is among those detained, along with two other suspected accomplices. They may face imprisonment of up to 15 years due to drug-related crimes and kidnapping charges, as stated by prosecutor Laura Neumann.
According to the BBC’s report based on police statements, the manager of the pizzeria has been re-arrested as he tried to leave the country. Currently, he is still in custody.
