Bungie recently unveiled a project called Marathon, a game that holds great importance not just for its owner, Sony, but also for the studio based in Bellevue, themselves.
As an enthusiastic supporter, I’m excited to share that this upcoming game won’t be a free-to-play title, nor will it set you back $70 at launch. Instead, it offers six character classes and three maps from the get-go. Admittedly, it might appear somewhat modest at first glance, but fear not! The developers have crafted this game to grow and expand over time. With a Battle Pass and regular seasonal content updates in store, we’re looking at a dynamic, evolving experience that will keep us engaged for the long haul.
In the arena of extraction shooters, the upcoming release will directly compete with established favorites such as Escape from Tarkov. Notably, the game developed by Battlestate is exclusive to PC platforms, whereas Marathon has the edge of catering to console gamers as well.
For Sony and its aspirations for live services, they likely won’t find a more promising opportunity than with a fresh multi-platform launch from Bungie. Although Helldivers 2 surprised as a successful release for them, it’s evident that they have lofty goals in this sector, and they’re depending on their recent acquisition to come through.
Marathon undeniably boasts an eye-catching, unique aesthetic that sets it apart among others. Known for its exceptional gameplay, the studio behind this game (once a part of Halo’s development team) is sure to deliver an outstanding first-person shooter experience at its core.
However, critics on social media have drawn parallels with the 2024’s failed project Concord, stating that its high price tag and specialized genre may lead to an immediate downfall. With a release date set for September 23rd and an upcoming alpha version imminent, the developer has just under six months to modify public opinion.
