Pope’s Death Sparks 3,200% Surge in Conclave Viewership—You Won’t Believe Why!

As a film enthusiast, I’ve found solace in revisiting the captivating drama “Conclave,” starring Ralph Fiennes, amidst the recent passing of Pope Francis. Remarkably, viewership for this intriguing production has skyrocketed by an astounding 3,200%, as many find comfort and curiosity in its narrative. Released back in October 2024, “Conclave” portrays Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Fiennes) orchestrating a conclave to elect the next pope, but uncovers secrets and scandals surrounding the leading contenders.

According to Luminate Data, the number of minutes watched for Conclave on U.S. streaming platforms skyrocketed to 18.3 million on Wednesday, following Pope Francis’ death the previous day. This represents a significant surge from the 6.9 million minutes viewed on Monday. Compared to the week prior, it’s evident that the demise of the Pope significantly boosted interest in the Conclave, with only 966,000 and 574,000 minutes streamed on Monday, April 14, and Tuesday, April 15, respectively.

Indeed, the reason for the surge in viewership of the movie “Conclave” on Prime Video this Tuesday is primarily because it was previously only available for rental or purchase on all video-on-demand platforms, or streaming exclusively on Peacock, which recently removed the film from its catalog. The arrival of new movies like “Conclave” on Prime always leads to an increase in viewership. Unfortunately, the timing couldn’t have been more opportune.
