In the latest installment of “Power Rangers Prime,” a new band of heroes is presented to the audience. However, as revealed in “Power Rangers Prime” #5, the team’s unity appears to be strained at present. It seems that being part of a team entails more than merely donning the costumes, a fact that this team will unfortunately discover through difficult experiences. The authors, Melissa Flores, Michael YG, Fabi Marques, and Ed Dukeshire, are doing an exceptional job of making this lesson captivating for readers who watch from afar. “Power Rangers Prime” succeeds due to the characters’ imperfections and their aspirations, and this issue showcases these elements in abundance.
Flores has assembled an eclectic blend of characters and relationships for the latest Ranger squad, and the internal turmoil alone would make for an intriguing tale. However, the intensity is amplified by their recently acquired abilities. Yet, as Rita poignantly points out, this team struggles to focus even when they strive to, and they function more like a team in title rather than in reality.
The significance of Rita’s comments lies in the fact that the series has carefully established most of the relationships within the team over the initial four issues, which greatly enhances our appreciation for their first spontaneous evaluation. Since the debut of the series, Rita has been a standout character. Her interactions with the team are now growing and producing enjoyable outcomes, particularly as Lauren starts to warm up to collaborating with her.
The arrival of VR Troopers amplifies the delightful turmoil, as Ryan shares connections with multiple new Rangers. Moreover, there’s discord not only outside but also within their team. One aspect that could use improvement is the character of Valentina, who seems less developed compared to others at this stage in the story, yet I appreciated Rita confronting her directly in the plot.
To create an exciting Power Rangers vs VR Troopers clash, it’s essential that the presentation is top-notch, and fortunately, the team is more than capable of delivering. Despite differences in team efficiency, the battle itself is thrilling, with YG and Marques making the most of the new abilities unleashed, causing quite a stir. Additionally, it’s no easy feat to surpass a T-Rex skeleton charging across the battlefield, but the visual spectacle certainly lives up to expectations.
Though some uncertainty lingers over this team and their individual motivations, it’s precisely this aspect that adds intrigue to the series, and it’s reflective of BOOM! Studios’ approach to Power Rangers overall. The Rangers’ imperfections are what make their triumphant moments all the more captivating, a trend that has been consistent even in Prime, laying the groundwork for even greater unpredictability ahead.
