PowerToys latest update focuses on fixes and new features for the Command Palette

Among all the tools I frequently use on Windows 11, PowerToys Run stands out as my favorite. Its upcoming advancement, the Command Palette, is now accessible, but it’s not fully optimized as of now, so I’m still sticking with what I have for the time being.

As I stand by, I’ve just noticed that the newest version of PowerToys has been released! Alongside numerous fixes and enhancements, there’s an emphasis on the Command Palette, with some fresh additions to its repertoire.

Here’s what’s new:

  • Added the ability for Command Palette to search any file using a fallback command.
  • Added the ability to make the Command Palette global hotkey a low-level keyboard hook.
  • Added open URL fallback command for the WebSearch extension, enabling users to directly open URLs in the browser from Command Palette.
  • You can now define custom formats in the Date and Time plugins of PT Run and Command Palette.

Additionally, you’ll discover a substantial collection of improvements and adjustments made to the Command Palette, detailed in the complete update log available on our GitHub repository.

Using Command Palette feels quite similar to anyone who has worked with PowerToys Run in the past, as it aims to be the future advancement of a well-known and trusted tool.

Developed as an advancement of PowerToys Run, focusing primarily on expandability, Command Palette is a speedy launcher that offers a more comprehensive interface and extra functions, all while maintaining optimal performance. With the shortcut key combination of Win+Alt+Space, you can quickly start anything!

Just like PowerToys Run, it currently offers extensions that you can activate or deactivate at your convenience, and new third-party ones are frequently developed.

The Command Palette is truly impressive, but I’m still hesitant to make the change at this time. Although it looks more attractive, I prefer the straightforwardness of PowerToys Run, and it serves my needs effectively as it stands.

However, I’m thrilled about the upcoming advancements, and with the skillset of the team and the dedicated community backing PowerToys, there’s absolutely no question in my mind that it will turn out fabulous.
