PowerToys Meets Winget

As a keen observer, I can’t help but express my profound affection for the Windows Package Manager, or winget, which has become an integral part of my digital toolkit. Moreover, PowerToys, these indispensable tools, have consistently held the top two spots in my recommendations for enhancing the Windows 11 user experience. Now, the excitement is palpable as these powerhouse tools are set to unite as one cohesive entity.

According to Microsoft’s Kayla Cinnamon, the PowerToys squad is presently working on an enticing integration.

Using the latest addition, you can now find and install packages through winget directly in the PowerToys Run interface. It’s not an entirely novel concept; in fact, I’ve discussed before a third-party tool that provided comparable capabilities.

The key distinction lies in its user-friendliness, especially for those less acquainted with winget. While the previous plugin necessitates knowledge of basic winget syntax and manual inputting, this official integration appears to offer a more straightforward experience. It seems that all you’ll have to do is search for your desired installation, and then simply install it without needing to type out any extra commands.

Using the Microsoft Store app or web browser for software acquisition is increasingly unnecessary, given another compelling reason. Winget, unlike a conventional store, doesn’t stock anything; instead, it operates based on a manifest that directs the tool to specific internet locations to retrieve the necessary files. This applies even if the software resides within the Microsoft Store itself.

In my experience, what seems a bit cumbersome when working with winget is the somewhat awkward syntax for installing packages. For instance, on Ubuntu, the command is simply “apt install gimp“, whereas on winget it’s “winget install gimp.gimp.” It just doesn’t feel as intuitive to me. However, the upcoming integration with PowerToys looks incredibly user-friendly, and I can’t wait to give it a shot.

Unfortunately, we don’t have a specific release date yet, but since the PowerToys team typically releases updates monthly, let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that the new version isn’t too long in coming.
