As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to hear whispers that Practical Magic 2 might be bringing back the enchanting cast! According to Deadline, there’s talk about Oscar-winning director Susanne Bier taking the helm for this highly anticipated sequel. If a deal is sealed, it would mark Bier’s return with none other than the mesmerizing duo, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock. Both stars are reprising their roles from the original Practical Magic, but they’ve also collaborated with Bier on separate projects. For instance, Sandra Bullock worked with her on Bird Box for Netflix, while Nicole Kidman has teamed up with Bier for The Perfect Couple and The Undoing, both on Netflix and HBO respectively. Here’s to hoping this dream team comes together once more!
The upcoming movie titled “Practical Magic 2″ continues the tale of the Owens sisters, as introduced in the original film. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who collaborated on the script for the 1988 movie, is penning the sequel. This new installment will draw inspiration from Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel, “The Book of Magic.” Notably, “The Book of Magic” is the direct sequel to the “Practical Magic” novel that inspired the first film. The other books in the series, “The Rules of Magic” and “Magic Lessons,” function as prequels. As for when production on “Practical Magic 2″ will start, no specific date has been announced yet; however, producer Denise Di Novi hinted that it may happen this year.
Previously stated, Di Novi mentioned that the project is expected to be completed in 2025, though an exact date isn’t certain yet. At present, we are only starting the scriptwriting process. Akiva Goldsman, who has worked on numerous projects including the original and many other ventures since then, is currently penning the script for this project.
In the initial movie, Nicole Kidman portrayed Gillian Owens. Previously, she has indicated her participation and hinted that there is much more to uncover about the Owens sisters’ history.
Indeed, I’m part of it, and so is Sandy,” Kidman explained. “It’s settled then. There’s plenty more to discuss, which is why we’re excited about the opportunity. We’ve managed to find a way to be involved.
The classic tale of Practical Magic, cherished by many fans, has been the basis for multiple proposed television reboots over the years, yet none have successfully come to fruition. In 2004, a reboot pilot was filmed for CBS and another prequel series was in development at ABC Family in 2010; however, neither project managed to be completed. More recently, in 2019, HBO announced plans for a prequel project titled Max, but that venture also did not come to fruition.
When it comes to Bier, although she’s relatively new to “Practical Magi,” her other works have gained significant recognition. Her collaboration with Bullock on the film “Bird Box” continues to be one of Netflix’s most-watched movies, while her latest series with Kidman, titled “The Perfect Couple,” was a huge success for the streaming platform. Additionally, she is credited as the creator for series such as “The Night Manager” (Season 1), “The Untouchables,” and “The First Lady.
Practical Magic 2 does not yet have an anticipated released date.
