Nosferatu’s Mustache Explained

If you’ve watched 2024’s Nosferatu, there was one detail that left a lasting impression on you as you exited the theater: his mustache. Despite the vampire character possessing numerous peculiar traits such as sores on his skin, long nails, and hypnotic eyes that seem to bore into your very essence… it’s the mustache that truly stands out. Director Robert Eggers recently spoke with Variety about how this iconic facial hair came to be.

To create a more terrifying vampire character than previously portrayed, Eggers delved into ancient folklore as his source of inspiration. He found the early folktales about vampires particularly intriguing because they were written by people who genuinely believed in their existence. Consequently, he focused on the grotesque, walking undead corpses that populated these stories. This led him to ponder how a deceased Transylvanian nobleman might appear. He envisioned a character wearing an intricate Hungarian costume with lengthy sleeves, tall shoes, and a furry hat, complete with a mustache – a defining characteristic of the culture. If you’re unfamiliar with the region, consider Vlad the Impaler as a reference. Interestingly, even Bram Stoker included a mustache for Dracula in his novel.

Nosferatu is also available to watch on Prime Video, iTunes, and other digital retailers.
