Vin Diesel recently disclosed plans for a brief prelude to the next “Fast & Furious” film, similar to the short movie “Los Bandoleros” released before the fourth full-length film in 2009. Just like then, Diesel is reportedly directing this new short to accompany the upcoming movie titled “Fast X”. In a Wednesday morning Instagram post, he emphasized that the franchise’s reach is now global and this will be its concluding chapter. He also hinted that filming for this unnamed prelude will take place in the Middle East, featuring high-octane action set against the backdrop of vast deserts. With these developments, we can only imagine what lies ahead for the Toretto family as they embark on their final journey together.
In 2009, Diesel mentioned that Universal had previously asked him to direct “Los Bandoleros” as a bridge between the first and fourth movie, to clarify Dom’s whereabouts during that time. He later stated that he was again being asked to direct a prequel to the finale, but he didn’t reveal any details about the storyline or how it would connect to the cliffhanger in “Fast X”. Additionally, he hinted that the location could be the Middle East, though he didn’t provide any further information about the plot.
It’s logical for Diesel to prefer keeping his plans hidden, given that the upcoming movie – often called “Fast X Part 2,” though it doesn’t have an official title yet – is shrouded in mystery itself. Revealing a piece of one might unveil the other, and Diesel needs time to ensure these projects align perfectly. Earlier this month, he shared that “Fast X Part 2” was postponed due to wildfires in Los Angeles, but he has no intention of relocating this large-scale production, believing that such significant projects can aid the local economy’s recovery.
In 2001, Dom Toretto first appeared in “The Fast and the Furious,” but he didn’t show up again until the fourth film, titled “Fast & Furious,” which came out in 2009. During this gap, the character played by Paul Walker, Brian O’Connor, embarked on a new adventure in “2 Fast 2 Furious.” Meanwhile, an entirely different cast took over for “Tokyo Drift” and raced around the globe. The storylines began to intertwine with “Los Bandoleros,” introducing Dom’s working relationship with Han Lue (Sung Kang), as well as new crew members Tego Leo (Tego Calderón) and Rico Santos (Don Omar).
The 20-minute movie provides valuable insights into the main films’ narrative, however it might not be apparent which gaps need to be addressed after Fast X. This clarity might emerge once we watch the full sequel. As of now, Fast X Part 2 is set for release in March 2026, but production timelines could shift. Additionally, there’s no information available regarding the release date of Diesel’s precursor short film.
The movie titled “Los Bandoleros” was included in the Blu-ray collection for the “Fast & Furious” special edition. As of now, it’s not accessible on any streaming platforms or PVOD stores. Currently, the “Fast & Furious” films can be found on Netflix, Max, Peacock, and a few other streaming services.
