Previously, the Predator franchise has crossed over with Alien and other sci-fi shows, but never Independence Day. On Wednesday, the trailer for Predator: Badlands was released, and spectators quickly noticed a potential Easter egg in the opening scene. It appears to be a Harvester skull, the alien species that attacked Earth in the 1996 blockbuster. Since Predators often collect keepsakes from their past victories aboard their ships, this could just be a subtle joke. However, fans are already brainstorming ways these narratives might intertwine, leaving some to ponder the possibilities.
The trailer for “Predator: Badlands” lasts approximately a minute, offering glimpses of the Predator species in thrilling new ways. Since the setting and activities of these characters are left ambiguous, it’s understandable that fans have zeroed in on a familiar scene – an initial shot that resembles previous ones. However, this time around, there are some distinct, intriguing additions to the trophies displayed within a Predator’s spaceship.
It appears that if there is a Harvester skull on this vessel, it’s prominently displayed and probably intended to catch the eye of spectators. However, this doesn’t guarantee that the crossover will be the central theme of the movie; it might just be a part of it. The film’s official synopsis suggests that it revolves around a young Predator outcast on a quest for “the ultimate adversary,” accompanied by an earthbound humanoid android.
In the movie, there’s been a confirmed collaboration with the Alien series featuring an android character, called Thia, portrayed by Elle Fanning. This android is referred to as a Weyland-Yutani synthetic. Another character introduced is The Predator, played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi and named Dek. At the moment, no other characters or cast members have been disclosed.
In the initial view, there’s nothing on the trophy wall that stands out as readily identifiable. There’s a human skull with its spine intact, alongside what seems to be a T-rex skull, which is the largest among them. Another appears to be a Predator’s skull, and others could potentially belong to known primates, but none clearly originate from species we commonly recognize, such as xenomorphs.
Should we receive confirmation that this is indeed a Harvester from “Independence Day”, it marks the first time the franchise crosses over with another sci-fi universe. Given that “Independence Day”, “Alien”, and “Predator” are all modern sci-fi stories implying the existence of advanced extraterrestrial life across the cosmos, it’s plausible they could share the same storyline continuity. However, as with any crossover, the success would hinge on the execution of the connected narrative and its ability to deliver a satisfying storyline.
The film titled “Predator: Badlands” will be released in theaters starting November 7th. You can currently stream previous installments of the series on Hulu, and “Independence Day” is available for streaming on MGM+.
