Every year during the summer, Hollywood unveils some of the most thrilling movies, many of which earn substantial profits at the box office. The upcoming ten films below are predicted to be the top blockbusters of summer 2025. As of now, “A Minecraft Movie” is leading the pack in terms of earnings, having amassed $355 million at the box office. This is followed by “Captain America: Brave New World” ($200 million) and “Dog Man” ($97 million). Keep in mind that there’s still plenty of movie season left, so it remains to be seen which film will claim the title of highest-grossing film of 2025.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly looking forward to Summer 2025, with around 50 films set to hit theaters. However, only a few among them seem destined for blockbuster status. The films that appear most likely to rake in big bucks are those connected to established franchises or already generating significant buzz. This buzz could stem from their star-studded casts and crews, or other captivating factors. Interestingly, the following 10 movies are predicted not only to recoup their production costs, but to surpass them significantly. The best-case scenario is that one of these films will even reach a billion dollars at the box office.
10. F1
Brad Pitt’s Racing Movie
Among the films on this list, one that’s expected to be a blockbuster not tied to a movie franchise is F1. This eagerly awaited sports film features Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a Formula One racer who embarks on a promising career in the 90s but is forced to retire after an accident. Years later, the owner of a struggling F1 team persuades Sonny to come back. Joining a self-assured newcomer, Sonny reignites his passion and his skills.
As a die-hard movie fan, I find the upcoming release of “F1” intriguing due to its high-profile status and substantial production cost. With a budget of $300 million, it’s a tall order for this movie to generate buzz at the box office. To simply break even, “F1” needs to gross an impressive $600 million. Yet, this figure is not insurmountable, especially if “F1” receives favorable reviews. If that happens, it could undoubtedly become a blockbuster success when it hits theaters on June 25.
9. How To Train Your Dragon
Live-Action Remake Of 2010 Dreamworks Movie
A popular trend right now in movies is live-action remakes, with one highly anticipated release being “How to Train Your Dragon.” Originally a 2010 animated film, this new adaptation centers around Hiccup, a viking teen who struggles to fit in amidst his aggressive, dragon-hunting companions. When Hiccup befriends a dragon he names Toothless and learns that dragons may not be as villainous as previously thought, the mismatch between him and his peers only deepens. The new “How to Train Your Dragon” is scheduled for release on June 13th.
In contrast to Disney’s 2025 remake of Snow White encountering potential controversy and negative impact on its box office success, the upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon appears to steer clear of such issues. The trailer suggests a faithful adaptation while introducing a grittier, more realistic mood. Moreover, the CGI promises to be top-notch, which will undoubtedly contribute positively to its reception. Given that the original movie grossed close to half a billion dollars, How to Train Your Dragon’s 2025 release could match or even surpass this impressive figure.
8. From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina
A Spinoff Starring Ana De Armas As A Ballerina Assassin
As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that this summer, the limelight is shining brightly on another favorite genre – spinoffs, with “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” taking center stage. Following four action-packed “John Wick” films, we now have a spinoff featuring Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a ballet dancer turned assassin, embarking on a journey to seek vengeance for her father’s death. Keanu Reeves will return alongside new faces like Norman Reedus and Gabriel Byrne. Catch “Ballerina” in theaters starting June 6th!
The significant factor contributing to the anticipated success of Ballerina is that it follows a series of blockbusters that have been incredibly profitable. For instance, John Wick, released in 2014, earned $86 million on a budget of only $20 million. Since then, each subsequent John Wick film has seen an increase in earnings, with the latest installment, John Wick: Chapter 4, grossing an impressive $440 million. Given this trend, it appears likely that Ballerina will generate a similar amount at the box office, unless its reviews are significantly less positive than anticipated.
7. 28 Years Later
The Long-Awaited Horror Sequel
A highly anticipated summer blockbuster film in 2025, titled “28 Years Later“, is set to be released on June 20th. This is the long-awaited sequel to the 2002 movie, “28 Days Later“, which followed Jim, a bike messenger who awakens from a month-long coma to learn that the world has been overrun by a virus called Rage, transforming humans into aggressive creatures. In this sequel, “a band of survivors have enjoyed peace for 30 years, but find themselves threatened by a new mutation that could undo their hard-won safety.
Among this year’s blockbusters, “28 Years Later” stands out as a unique choice due to its horror genre. While horror films often struggle in comparison to more universally appealing movies, the long-awaited return of Alex Garland and Danny Boyle as writer and director, respectively, along with an impressive cast featuring Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and others, makes it a strong contender to draw audiences to theaters. Given its success potential, it’s likely that “28 Years Later” will match or even surpass the $84 million earned by the original release.
6. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
The Last Mission: Impossible Movie
This summer promises not just remakes and spin-offs, but also finales. On May 23rd, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will hit the screens, marking the last appearance of Tom Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt. In this installment, he and his team pursue a villain aiming to acquire an AI program with devastating consequences. Joining Tom are Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Hannah Waddingham, and Nick Offerman in the cast.
Just like Ballerina and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, these movies could potentially be box office successes due to the popularity of their previous installments. However, unlike Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One which underperformed in 2023 by earning $571 million, Final Reckoning‘s success might hinge more on its reviews. This is particularly significant given the massive production budget of $400 million for Final Reckoning. While it’s predicted to earn a substantial amount, it may not reach the same level of profit as other films in this list.
5. Freakier Friday
The Sequel To The 2003 Family Movie
It’s no secret that a few Disney movies are included in this list, and one that’s expected to make waves this summer is “Freakier Friday.” This movie is actually a sequel to the 2003 comedy, “Freaky Friday,” which focused on a mother-daughter duo who were polar opposites, only to find themselves inhabiting each other’s bodies, thus gaining insight into their respective challenges. True to form, in “Freakier Friday,” the pair will switch bodies yet again, but this time it involves the next generation.
Disney finds the upcoming movie “Freakier Friday” an exhilarating change from their recent string of live-action remakes. In this new installment, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan will reprise their roles, promising a dose of nostalgia and amusing nods to the original. The 2003 version of “Freaky Friday” made $160 million, and with “Freakier Friday,” Disney expects to reach that figure easily. However, they must ensure that the charm and fun of the first film are preserved in this sequel.
4. Superman
A Remake Of The Original Superhero Movie
2025 looks promising for superhero movie enthusiasts as two highly anticipated films are slated to hit theaters. The first, titled “New Dawn of Justice: Superman“, kicks off the new DC Universe era and retells the timeless tale of Superman, an extraterrestrial who disguises himself as Clark Kent on Earth. In this adaptation, David Corenswet will portray the title character, with Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced joining him in the cast. The film is scheduled for release on July 11.
The genre of superhero films can sometimes be unpredictable, particularly when they originate from DC Comics. However, it appears that the upcoming Superman film has a solid base to build upon. This isn’t just because it offers a fresh start for the company, but also due to its talented cast members. Given the financial success of recent DC films, Superman might potentially earn anywhere from $200 million to $700 million, contingent on the film’s reception. Fingers crossed that it will resemble The Batman more than it falls short, delivering more delight than dismay.
3. The Fantastic Four: First Steps
A Second Reboot Of The Superhero Franchise
In 2025, the second major superhero movie for that year, releasing just a fortnight after “Superman,” is Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Footsteps.” This is the second re-introduction of the “Fantastic Four” series, and it tells the story of four heroes in a retro-futuristic Earth setting. Here, they are tasked with safeguarding humanity from cosmic threats like Galactus and the Silver Surfer. “First Footsteps” is another high-profile production, featuring stars like Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Vanessa Kirby. The film is slated for release on July 25.
Initially, First Steps may encounter similar challenges as Superman due to waning enthusiasm for superhero films, given recent failures like The Marvels and Madame Web. There’s a risk it might not meet audience expectations, leading to a less-than-successful run. However, if First Steps leverages its strong leadership team and 1960s style, it could mimic the success of future Marvel films such as 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, potentially grossing up to $1 billion.
2. Jurassic World Rebirth
The Latest Installment In The Jurassic Park Franchise
Among all the franchises listed, it’s undoubtedly one of the most financially successful – “Jurassic Park”. This summer, the series is set to maintain its box office dominance with the release of “Jurassic World: Dominion”. The story revolves around a new group of characters who journey to an island that was previously part of Jurassic Park, initially intending just to gather samples. However, they ultimately encounter the last remaining dinosaurs. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali. “Jurassic World: Dominion” is scheduled to premiere on July 2.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must admit that the Jurassic Park franchise hasn’t always been universally praised, but one thing is for certain – these films have consistently made a significant impact at the box office. To give you an idea, both Jurassic Park and all four Jurassic World movies managed to rake in over $1 billion! Jurassic Park III, despite being the least profitable, still managed to earn a staggering $368 million, which is more than its production budget. This history suggests that Jurassic World Dominion (or Rebirth as some call it) might be another blockbuster hit, potentially grossing over $1 billion if critics find it enjoyable.
1. Lilo & Stitch
A Live-Action Remake Of The 2002 Movie
This summer’s potential blockbuster could very well be Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch,” set to premiere on May 23rd. It’s a live-action rendition of the 2002 animated movie, where we meet Lilo, a young Hawaiian girl who encounters an alien outlaw named Stitch, and ends up adopting him as her pet. As Stitch grows attached to Lilo, he learns about family values, all while attempting to elude capture more than ever before.
It appears that Disney films sometimes receive mixed responses, particularly live-action remakes. However, it seems that Lilo & Stitch could potentially be fantastic. Unlike previous Disney adaptations which have struggled with CGI and altered the original narrative, Lilo & Stitch seems to be quite faithful. Last year, Disney held the title for the highest-grossing movie with Inside Out 2, and there’s a possibility that Lilo & Stitch could continue this success, at least during the summer months.
