President Donald Trump’s legal journey has come to an end.
In New York State, the court case involving the 78-year-old’s hush money ended on January 10th. Judge Juan Merchan handed down a sentence of unconditional discharge for this particular case, which was the only one among his four criminal cases that went to trial (two were dismissed). This means the President will technically remain a felon but won’t serve any jail time, penalties, or probation. The verdict came 10 days before the inauguration of the President.
In delivering his verdict, Merchan emphasized that it was solely the office of the presidency – with its associated protections and significance – that influenced his choice in imposing that specific penalty.
During the court proceedings, as reported by CNN, the judge stated, “The sole valid decree allowing the registration of a judgment or conviction without infringing upon the highest authority is an absolute dismissal.” The judge emphasized that the extraordinary legal safeguards extended to the position of the chief executive are so significant that they overshadow all other considerations. These protections do not diminish the gravity of the offense in any way and do not serve as justification for its occurrence.
He noted, “The unique legal safeguards surrounding the position of President of the United States are remarkable, rather than the individual holding that position.
Trump defended himself, expressing strong criticism towards the trial process. In his own words, as reported by NBC News, he stated, “This has been an incredibly unfair ordeal.” Speaking from his residence in Florida, he added, “The intention was to tarnish my reputation and ensure I wouldn’t win the election. However, let me be clear: I am completely innocent. I have done nothing wrong.
Trump’s legal team attempted to halt the sentencing process, making Trump the unique president to face criminal charges that led to sentencing. However, the Supreme Court, by a close 5-4 vote on January 9th, decided to permit the hearings to move forward.
Todd Blanche, one of Trump’s attorneys, argued in court that the Manhattan district attorney’s office may have overstepped in their prosecution of Trump. He pointed out that this case appears to be a result of the district attorney’s campaign promise to pursue Trump if elected. (NBC reports this statement.)
The attorney expressed regret, mentioning that the president intends to lodge an appeal. “Today is a sorrowful day for President Trump, his family, and his companions,” he said. “From my perspective, it’s also a disheartening day for our nation.
During the trial, prosecutor Joshua Steinglass, although suggesting an unconditional discharge out of respect for the presidency, strongly criticized Trump’s behavior, stating that his actions “directly assault the very foundations of the legal system itself.
According to NBC, he stated that “This defendant has inflicted lasting harm on the public’s trust in the criminal justice system.
